I missed the bus this morning and so, instead, I went with my dad across the border to pick up some guitars. Anyway, on our way back (at the Canadian customs) we met these two folky girls from New York who were having their car basically torn apart. They were very very nice girls, but I hope they didn't get the idea they were going to smuggle anything over because if they so much as find a pot seed their lives will be made a whole lot more difficult. Has anything like this ever happened to anybody else?

So, are these girls going into Canada or into the US? Who's gonna make life difficult for them, the US government or the Canadian?

So, the Canadian border police would arrest them and make their lives miserable for a small amount of pot? I thought that small quantities of pot were almost legal in Canada.

This is true, however these girls were American citzens.

And thats why I wonder why anybody would try to smuggle pot over the border, its not like we don't have any!

So, you're saying it's on the verge of being legal to possess small amounts in Canada, but not to bring it across the border? And what is it, like a traffic ticket offense to possess small amounts there?

Oh, damn, I didn't realize that. So, what is the deal now? Are they putting people in jail for possessing small amounts? I thought Canada was so 'enlightened'. There goes the neighborhood, I suppose...

In a strictly legal sense, possession is ilegal.

On the other hand, the supreme court of Saskatchewan ruled that prosecuting a 16 year old kid for an eigth was unconstitutional.

In actuality, nothing is likely to happen for the most part for possessing small amounts. I got busted with an ounce on a greyhound bus going to Calgary, and they just confiscated it.

Enforcement varies by location, really. In BC, it isn't a very big deal. Nobody I know has ever been prosecuted except when combined with other charges (like driving under the influence). At the 420 gathering outside the Art Gallery, for example, there are thousands of people blazing in front of cops.

Its probably a little different in redneck areas of Alberta, though.
