Hello! They are planning on building a tidal energy plant on our west coast. It will produce energy from tidal currants and seems pretty cool. They said there are only a couple of these power plants in the world so I am kind of wondering if there is a good reason for this. (maybe there not so cool and damage the environment?) Also I was kind of disappointed to hear that most of the investment for the plant is coming from foreign investors. Energy is a commodity so a lot of the money generated from the plant won’t stay in Canada.

    Hey dude,

do you know if it's a tidal barrage, or tidal stream plant?

Tidal barrage's act by trapping the tide, often like a coastal damn on a river mouth, or by sectioning off part of the coast and creating a coastal reservoir. These are an older technology, and are only applicable in certain situations. They can be good if constructed properly, but those which damn rivers can have large environmental impacts

Tidal stream devices act like underwater wind turbines, and are an emerging technology, hence there are very few developments, but this technology seems very hopefull and has only small environmental impacts.

It will be Tidal stream device. Also they are planning on building the worlds largest wind farm on Vancover Island.(1000 wind mills or - what ever they are called)

tidal stream are awesome, that sounds like a great development :)

wind mills, turbines, windy things... all's good :)

    the world is beautiful

Hello! thanks for the replies – when they build those wind mills I would like to go see them.

There's a tidal power plant in Nova Scotia. I guess its a tidal barrage set-up by what kier described. Once in a while, it traps a whale in the river. But, tidal energy is supposed to be more efficient than solar.

By a long long way, solar is very innefficient, however provides an energy source with little/no maintenence needs and a long lifetime. Payback of the technology would probably be multiples bigger than other renewable technologies.

Saying that, solar prices will drop as the larger manufacturing facilities are built. Both the US and China are building huge solar PV farms, and with that they will build facilities to manufacture PV on a larger scale hence lowering costs.

    hello guys

    how are you ?

I have very important questions !!

my professor asked my to do some research about Vancouver Island especially Nanaimo about these questions :

is Vancouver island has any kind of environmentally friendly energy sources ?

if yes, where is it located ?

These are examples of energy sources : wind , solar , geothermal , gas , tidal , hydro , nuclear .

He asked me to search about geothermal and tidal ?

please if u know any information just let me know .

    Thank you
