on the occassion that i do eat chocolate (in a candy bar) sometimes my throat will close up when I swallow. What could be causing this? It also happens sometimes with gum, but not as bad. It makes it really almost impossible to breathe for a good ten seconds
Anything, environmental, food, pet, etc...does your throat hurt? I'm a little unclear about what you mean by closing up.
i doubt its psychological as i'm not paying attention to it when i'm eating, it just comes out of nowhere it seems to happen if i dont chew really really well and the chocolate gets in my throat what i mean is that it feels like it's closed up, and it's extremely hard to breathe
loveflower..this happens to me too. you are the FIRST person that i think understands it. it first happened to me when i was 17 and did a somersalt in the pool.... sometimes now it happens when i move my head funny or yawn... it feels exactly like my throat is closed up for a good 10 seconds and it's really scary....
lol no it's not all chocolate, it's just if i were eating something like a snickers bar and swallowed before i had chewed really really well, it happens
That happens to me with frozen pizzas ...dunno if its the additives or if I never learned how to swallow dough. I suppose you could take a couple benadryl an hour before eating a snickers...if ur throat still closes up at least you'll know it's not an allergy.
This may be the beginning of anaphyactic shock. If you are "lucky" you don't die the first few times it happens. But AS gets WORSE with each exposure. YOU NEED TO NOT EAT CHOCOLATE!!!! Talk to your doctor about an "Epipen" this is a device which you can inject yourself with epinephrine so you have time to get to the hospital (DO NOT drive yourself, iinstead call a parent or friend or ambulance) before you die. I am not messing around. I have AP from Shellfish and peanuts. Look at the chocolate you are eating which caused the shock. Does the wrapper say "This product was made in a facility which processes peanuts and tree nuts." If so, it may actually be the NUTS you are allergic to. See an allergist immediately. Anaphylactic shock can and does kill. I got really sick a few months ago, when my food was cooked NEXT TO some shrimp at a Japanese resturant. I didn't use my epipen, but I used a albuteral inhaler and a steroid inhaler and some benadryl. But I am a medical professional and I kinda knew what I was doing. I gave the drugs 5 minutes to work (the benadryl a little longer) and then my dh was going to take me to the ER. I was WIPED OUT for days. Please see an allergist. It may save your life. Next time, your throat may not clear itself in 10 seconds. Blessings and health. Maggie
I've had so many close calls with hidden allergens when eating out that my Dr suggested that I take the Benedryl BEFORE I eat. lol
I'll definitely stay away from the chocolate and gum until i can ask a doctor, I'll ask my mom too (nurse of.. god knows how many years, 30,40) The thing is, I can eat nuts just fine- peanuts, chestnuts, cashews, almonds, etc..
It may just be the chocolate itself, then. A allergy test and a RAST test will let your doctor know. Good luck.
Maggie Sugar, the thing is, it's only with candy bars that this happens. I can eat anything else with chocolate or nuts just fine.
