I forget who did those. It was a famous painter who gradually became psychotic and the paintings showed it, according to psychologists. Maybe Sam knows who it was. .
Crap, Sam_Stoned beat me to it! http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&...ain+cats&gbv=2&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai= If you look at his art over time it maps the progression of his schizophrenia. At first it's funny pics of cats doing very human things. Then it's very psychedelic cats that look like they are part of the noetic, the numimous, they are full of inner light and geometry and flowers come off of them . . . . Then they just get kinda intense and super-DMT like. Then they just get disturbing looking. The ones that look angry or evil make me feel very sad at times . . . again, i see the progression of art mapping the progression of Wains illness and thoughts . . . .
He started drawing pictures of his wifes cat to make her feel better as she was dying of breast cancer. He realized he was good at it and started to make a good living. Louis Wain cats became a very happening trend. But as with all trends, people stopped careing. He went broke and had to move in with his sister. He fell into a terrible depression and spent the rest of his days in a mental aslyum. The saddest part to me, is in those later days... I think he missed just drawing cute little kittens. It's all very profound. I am not into art really... but Wain has joined the ranks of Dali and Van Gogh in 'artists I give a shit about'
i'd positive rep you for this Sam_Stoned, but it's too early . . . .says i have to give others reps first . . .
he might have gotten schizophrenia from being around cats too much.. i wiki'd it and that's what it said
No. I explained it. Loss of his wife on top of their final bonding experiance (his cat paintings) becoming an ' tired old trend' (and also bankrupted him) made him snap. The road to mental illness is a multi-dimentionial time-line. His thought noodle wasn't just allergic to cat dander, that's asinine.
It is the general consensus that he suffered from schizophrenia, or at least Asperger Syndrome, both of which are more common than people realize. Either way, the dude's art is exceptional and very interesting to look at.
Louis Wain is highly collectible as an artist, and his freaky work is pretty much dwarfed by the postcards and illustrations he did. Cats were very popular, but he also did alot of other animals just as well. The fractal cats of his post breakdown work was at one time relegated to psych classes - thats psychology not psychedelic, where I first saw it. Once you know what Wains style is, you can find his illustrations in alot of places.
