Is anyone else sick of it already? It seems like almost daily, new "low carb" products are being introduced to the market. This summer, a total of 60 low carb ice creams are set to hit store shelves. I can't tell you how many low carb beers are on the shelves already. Aren't regular Budweiser and Corona low carb enough? Hell, it's practically seltzer water!

Do you think most consumers think about how much money these food companies are making off them? Probably not. It seems like a lot of these people on the low carb, Atkins-type diets, don't even read into their supposed diets. Like the proverbial sheep they are, they think eating anything is OK, as long as it bares the "low carb" moniker. That is just ridiculous!

When are people going to learn that the only way to lose weight is to eat sensibly and exercise? This low carb scheme is maybe somewhat relevant, and it probably does work for some people. But why are so many people jumping on the bandwagon now? Because it's the trendy thing to do? I guess it's kind of like the Da Vinci Code of "healthy eating."

Oh man, I am so annoyed with the whole thing! Diets are so irritating. People are willing to find any way that there is to avoid exercising and just plain eating less.

I think that diet soda is possibly the dumbest thing on earth. If you want to be healthy don't drink a friggin' soda! It is not going to be good for you no matter what! It is so stupid!

the low-carb fad makes my skin crawl. it's poor nutritional advice! carbohydrates are the body's fuel, we need them! but there's a difference between the carbohydrates in whole, unprocessed or sprouted grains and the carbohydrates present in bleached "enriched" white flour. the atkins diet has way too much fat and protein (yes, you can get too much protein!) and not enough whole, unrefined grains and fresh fruits and vegetables.

any "diet" that glorifies one nutrient and villifies another worries me. sure, if you restrict your diet, you'll lose weight. people have lost weight on the atkins diet. people also lost weight on the grapefruit diet. does either make one healthier? does the weight stay off? hell no. doesn't anyone remember the meaning of a balanced diet anymore? and if people really were serious about shedding their pounds, they'd put down their fad diet books, get off their fat asses, and exercise!

gotta disagree with a lot being said here about the value of a true low carb diet. it's done me a world of good. i cut out all breads and sugars and the change in my health was immediate. when i don't eat processed foods i feel 100% better, but the cheap food is all garbage carbs. when i actually went on the atkins diet, i ate far more fresh vegetables than i ever had before in my life. i ate meat and veggies, some fat. the sum total was that i ate less food altogether and felt better. i think the low carb trend is doing some good in that the people are taking a closer look at the types of carbs they're willing to eat and thus eating better combinations of grains, vegetables and higher amounts of fiber.

of course people will always look for the easier way out. people will gorge on fat like they gorge on bread. still unhealthy. but i don't think we all metabolize the same foods the same way. some people will thrive on vegan or vegetarian diets, i lost my hair. some people thrive on an even balance of the two, i was always hungy and still had high blood pressure and cholesterol and no energy. i cut out nearly all carbs that weren't in vegetables (fruit did me no good, either, being much like candy) and i thrived. other people will probably lose all their strength and maybe some hair, like i did when i was vegan. i think it depends on teh person.

i've done the low carb diet twice... and kept it off... after my son i weighed 160 pounds i did low carb a month i went down to 145.... now i just got off the low carb diet again.. i weighed 145 now im 125 in just one month. i dont buy the crap in the store that advertisizes low carb its crap.. i buy meat, veggies, drink lots of water and exercise. i have way more energy then i did before, and just damn feel good to be a size 5!

this diet has been around well a while. the first time i did it was over 3 years ago. im not sure why the big kick is about it now on t.v and in stores.

anyways to each his own. it works for me. fuck the tv and there advertising, they are just trying to lure people in. i know.

i never realized how disgustingly sweet all our food was until i cut out sugar. now it seems that EVERYTHING has extra sugar in it. i used to love teriyake sauce, but i can't find one that isn't chock full of sugar anymore. i have to make my own. everythign has added sugar for no reason! it's pretty sickening.

If I cut out carbs, I would probably starve to death. It is mostly all that I eat. But I only eat things that are 100% whole wheat, and without added sugars and all that, especially that goddamn corn syrup that is in practically everything.

When i was a teen my mom was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. This made us all read the labels and my entire family was just appalled at the sugar that is in everything. We had no idea how much before then. Low carb is a new gimmick if ever i saw one.I don't think we all should stuff ourselves with bread either but, all things in moderation is my brand of nutrition. Exercise is the key of any successful weightloss program. If you want to do it right that is. I hate counting my food.....don't you?

i think by following a low-carb diet....you're setting yourself up for disaster in the long run.....of course you loose weight when you are on it, your body is burning up everything else in it because its missing out on certain things it needs......many people get bad breath while following a low-carb diet.....its all about knowing the food you are eating and making sure you eat the right things.....moderation/portion control and exercise.....key to losing weight.....and keeping it off and remaining healthy.....my sister, good example, lost 50 pounds from a sensible diet, she is not on the low-carb diet, and exercise.....so....that's my input....

well, the fact is that people eat WAY TOO MANY carbs, and not enough fat. the food industry replaced fat with sugar in their low fat foods and watched people go crazy. i think it's very good when someone is doing low carb the right way, which means, getting rid of breads and sugars and veggies that dont' seem to agree with thier bodies and instead reach for nutrient dense vegetables which they are actually craving for the first time in their entire lives.

yeah, exercise CAN HELP SOME PEOPLE. sorry to tell you, but two years of managing a gym and working out 2-3 hours every day with a trainer and without, while still trying to count my calories on a low fat diet did me no good whatsoever. i didn't lose weight or reduce my size. my body fat ratio was static, but thanks to my vegan diet, my hair started falling out and now i can't get near soy products without getting sick. and still my blood pressure and cholesterol were too fucking high.

a couple months on the atkins diet fixed all that for me. so don't knock it too hard. some people are just built differently.

the people that i personally know that are on the low carb diet, are doing dumb shit like cutting out their morning toast, and replacing it with bacon. yeah, that's going to help you lose weight...most people on this diet have no real idea what they are eating. they are the same people who thought/think that if 2 metabolife pills a day make you feel more energetic and less hungry, then 7 of them would be better. also, it always kills me to see people who are supposed to be on a diet sucking down 44 oz sodas all day every day.

mynameiskc, you seem like an exception.

no, i'll eat a piece of bacon in the morning. it lasts a hell of a lot longer than toast with butter and sugar. i think that's kind of the point. two slices of bacon in the morning alone will keep me from getting hungry for a very long time. and that's all i have to eat, and i won't think about it again until i make myself some tuna lightly brown in olive oil and put over a bed of spinach green with some red wine vinegar on the top or somethign like that. it's incredibly satisfying, satiating, and reduced my overal cholesterol and gave me plenty of energy. however, i don't think that everyone is built to eat this way, i really don't. however, i think that fat is not our enemy. a little fat goes a long way and keeps you from getting hungry again. i think people reducing fat too far give themselves more trouble with their diets and live in misery.

i understand this now. i spent those two years in hell getting sick and feeling like garbage, watching my cholesterol rising on a daily basis while seeing a nutritionist! what that told me is that the freaking medical community doesn't know nearly as much about how the human body works as they like to claim they do.

though right now i'm forced to exist on broke food which consists mainly of mac & cheese, bean and rice and ramen noodles, which would make anyone feel like garbage, doing the atkins diet DID help me overcome a heavy sugar addiction. dave hasn't been able to give up refined sugars, he's held too deeply in thrall by it. though he has tried. he will have to eventually, he's hypoglycemic and it's getting worse with every year. i have managed to introduce the concept of green vegetables to him, finally. that took a lot of work.

Those "low-carb" foods can't be good for you. I mean, what the hell is really IN them? I saw low-carb bread selling for an arm and a leg. BREAD! That scares me, since bread is a carb, what did they do to make it "low-carb"?

You know, it's been proven that dead bodies take a lot longer to rot than they used to............and it's not because of the formaldehyde.......

    mynameiskc-

when i said i knew people who were replacing toast with bacon, what i meant, but didn't clearly state was that they were replacing two pieces of toast with as much bacon as they could eat, thinking that bread=bad, meat=good. i guess my point was that quantity still counts. a lot of people on low carb diets seem to be of the opinion that they can eat as much food as they want, as long as it is "low carb". obviously, you aren't included in that group.
