I was thinking of starting some dreads but I don't know where to start like how long does my hair need to be? Do I ever wash my hair? Can all hair be dreaded? etc etc..
wash your hair yes you can.. and i would reccomend 5 in. or more for backcombing yes ALL hair can be dreaded.. www.knottyboy.com this will help a LOT buy their shampoo ur self a flea comb (unused) and backcomb away P.S. they have a backombing instructions so dont worry about it and it you have any questions you can ask here and dont use wax
It needs to be about three or four inches long to backcomb. But I warn you. If you start with hair that short you're gonna have little chode dreads sticking up all over your head. I'd go with backcombing. It's what I did. If you have really nappy or curly hair, you could just let it go, or use a sweater. Otherwise, I'd say backcombing is your best bet.
Do you have to like use shampoo that is specifically for dreads? I know to stay away from conditioner though
People say you do. I just use regular shampoo (I make sure it's not 2-in-1) and I haven't had problems yet. I used to have dreadheadHQ, and I don't really see a difference between that shit and regular shampoo, other than it's like, twelve dollars a bottle and I have to order it offline. So yeah. Whatever's in my shower is fine for me.
i use dr bronners usualy, or whwatever i got, i never backcombed or used wax i started mine when my hair was 2 inches lomng & yea they stuck out all over but who cares patience is the key, dreads will happen if u just let them
Yeah, but when your just starting, shou;d you refrain from shampoo all together? I heard its good to use regular soap, but im not sure how much truth thee is in that...
the less residues the better theirs soap with no residues and its real cheap i forget the name. anyways anything with a sent probly has residue and isnt good...... in the start use shampoo once a week
i have started to use the Australian bodyshop tea tree shampoo its fairly cheap & keeps the itchies down
Try to use an all natural soap or shampoo. You can buy them in stores like Henry's or Trader Joe I believe. Though they're a bit more expensive than drug store shampoo. Right now I'm just using what's in my shower. If you can get a shampoo with tea tree oil then that's best because the tea tree oil is a natural bug repellant. The last thing you want is to get a buggie in your dreads (only way to get rid of lice, for example, would be to shave off your dreads because you can't comb them out). I'm not saying that dreads will give you a bug problem. It's just that we have to be more careful than people who don't dread. I say in the beginning wash them about once a week. After they knott up you can probably do it twice a week if you need to. I found that the less often I wash my hair the less the natural oils get stripped from it. So, my scalp will then produce less oil and be cleaner in the long run. Also, when you wash them try to wash just your scalp and let the soap or shampoo run down your dreads from there. This way you have less of a chance of getting a build up in your dreads. Shampoo bars or soap bars are great for this but liquid works too if you apply it to your fingertips. One reason you don't want to wash your hair too often is because dreads will take longer to dry than your hair would if it wasn't dreaded. You don't want to chance getting any mildew in there as a result. A good thing to do after your shower is to shake your head a lot to kind of "fling out" any excess moisture. Then towel dry it really well (that will probably help them knot up a bit too). Hope this helps! *hugs* Jessie
