Hello, I am thinking about moving to oregon... a friend of mine just moved out there about a month ago and she absolutely loves it. Well I was wondering what schools are good and what areas in general would be best. I was thinking ashland because my friend is there, but im open to other places and ideas. What is the weather like there, winter and summer?
Thanks for any advice or information you can give me

It's expensive here now. And crowded. And not much at all like what Oregon was before thousands started moving here. But it's still a nice place.

But you have to pay for it. Housing is very expensive. Jobs are scarce. Tuition is way high. Ashland is becoming more and more crowded and expensive every month.

Oregon west of the Cascades gets a lot of rainy days for 9-10 months of the year although Ashland is bit more sunny. East of the Cascades there's a lot of sun year-round. West of the Cascades the climate is temperate, seldom really hot and seldom really cold, but Ashland can get very hot.

If you visit Oregon don't come during the summer or early fall. Come when it's chilly, wet and gray. That's how you'll know how you feel about it.

Unless you have a job, or other means of support, you may want to postpone moving here. Everything Mentalfloss said is true. While you can find affordable housing, you will be commuting to get to work. (Meaning the cheap housing and jobs that pay a livable wage are not in the same area.) Ashland and Medford are like any other mid size city in the state. Lots of low to mid wage jobs ($7-10), and an inflated cost of living. The utilities (electric and gas especially) will take your breath away in the winter time! If you live anywhere in the Willamette Valley, you had better REALLY like rain because it rains from October to March, almost every day (30 days straight is not uncommon).

I made the leap 3 years ago.. from the midwest (Kansas) to Port Angeles, WA (very similar to Astoria or or Canon Beach, BETTER tourists though as most come to hike or fish the olympics). But let me tell you I struggled. I had about 3500 saved.. and my transmission went out in my car about 200 miles from port angeles, I gave the car up.. rather than fixing it.. rented a Jeep and packed all my stuff to town, had no place to stay and no job... got stuck in a $8 hour job and a shabby $425 apartment.

After about 10 months I got a job managing Papa Murphys..now up to $12.90 still not enough. Another year goes by I move to another city with a girl (still on the peninsula) and I land an ideal sales job making good sustainable income. 2.5 year it took to get on my feet. Just a warning.
