...with about five feet of hair. I want to keep my hair long, but it's really hard to take care of. I can't even wash it in the shower anymore or just have my head under the bath. I have to pull the shower head out and wash it. I really want dreads. It seems like the closest I'm going to get to having long AND manageable hair.
Is it best to do it yourself or have someone do it? How do you do it yourself?

5 feet of hair?! wow. If you dreadlock it you might find it a liiiittle more manageable in that it will be shorter. As dreadlocks 'mature' and tighten they'll shrink up, sometimes by as much as half. So you won't have as much length to deal with, but long dreadlocks are a lot of work in that they'll take a lot of time to thoroughly wash and dry.

It's not so easy to do it all yourself. Most people will want to have the dreadlocks evenly placed and sized across their head and it's not really possible to section your hair off evenly by yourself and then it's hard to work on the back of your head anyway.

^ As above. 'loose' hair dries a lot faster and is much easier to keep clean.

The truth is that the longer the hair the more work it is.

I grew my Dreads down to waist length and they just ended up as big heavy dirty ropes. I had them rolled up on my head all the time cos that was the only way of keeping them out the way. Ironically then my hair wasn't long to look at at all.

Your hair is stunning the way it is anyway.

Well thank you.:) I guess I'll start looking for someone to get them started for me and stuff. It just gets tangled so easy. Like even if I brush it out before I wash it, it still ends up a mess. Conditioner and detangle spray help a lot, but I don't like having to buy several products to get my hair to do what I want.

Plus I've run out of things to do with it. All I ever do is put it in a bun, ponytail, or braids.

If you tangle naturally, then there's no real need to get anyone to do anything.
Nature can take care of it. Throw away your brush and stop conditioning.

^^ See, we like it the way it is.

I've had long loose hair too and like I said "the longer the hair the more work it is."

This raises one of those "Why ?" issues for me.
"Why does our head hair grow so long" ?
    (Beards included).
