So I'm 17, I live with my parents, have a 10$ an hour job working at my parents buisness and good friends. I've had the feeling for quite awhile that there is something more for me to do out there, it's like theres somewhere I have to go but I don't know where it is yet. So from this feeling I have came to the conclusion that I must leave this town, my family, and my friends for awhile. Now this won't be until I am done high school so I have the chance to go for a higher education (been thinking of becoming an english teacher) but once that hits I'm outta here. It'll proboaly end with me getting a ride to Calgary, taking the trans-can to B.C then traveling down the west coast to California. But with all this there is another part of me, a very small part that believes I am nothing more than another whiney teenager. So, what are your opinions on my situation, hopefully some of you old hippies will have some good advice.
Thanks and peace to you all. \\//

im not a old hippie, but i am a peer that can relate. I planned on hitching around for the summer after i graduated and going to this years rainbow gathering. But, shit didnt fall into place, my parents where stressing over my plans to hitch, and some of my equipment fell apart when i was testing it out. So i have postponed my plans. It sucks.

But enough about me. There is more to life and this period of time we inhabit this body. Its up to ourselves if this life has any meaning. In another forum, i learned of a piece of wisom courtesy of Bhaskar, basically, stop putting conditions on happiness and peace. This can also be applied to anything not limited to the imagination.

Now for a bit of my wisdom, there is nothing without will, if you dont full heartedly want to achieve something or transform, you will never transform. And without intent, Will is wasted and only flutters away like a swarm of butterflies freed from a net. Will and intent, is your foundation for your actions.

Dont see yourself as a "whiney teenager" for questioning the status quo and thinking of other prospects in life. The true whiney and worthless people are those who just sit around and hesitate to act. I have been like that before, and it aint fun. Im not saying this state is permanent tho.

Never deny your instincts, its what has brought our breed of human to this day.

I hope this gives you some benefit

It's a natural cycle of growth for a person to want to leave home when around 15-18. It's built-in, natural, genetic, the way that Nature made us, so don't worry about whether it's good or bad, it's just what it is.

Prior to the 20th century it was common for people to get married by 16 or before, and life was a little more natural back then.

If my opinion counted, I'd say take a long trip, maybe spend a couple years bummin around the country or world, discover yourself, what your pleasures are, how you fit in with some cultures and don't fit in with others. If you don't ever make the trip, you will likely always wonder what it might have been like to be free. Chances are you'll be back home within a few weeks anyway, or you might find a wonderful life doing something you never thought of before.

The natural cycle often makes a person begin settling down by around the age of 20-22, so the time to go is soon. When the need for traveling is out of your system, then you can jump back into education and get the degrees.
