    What do you do?

I had that happen to me on Saturday. The parcel was marked my home address, but I knew nobody by the name on the label. It was a big-ass box, but rather light weight. Marked "Gift Inside" and delivered by UPS.

I guess my Christmas spirit got the best of me as I went 15 minutes out of my way during my lunch break to drop it off at the UPS office, leaving it totally unopened. But I wonder what I would have missed out on by keeping it all to myself....

i get mail all the time for someone up the road with similar address

if i drop it in the post box it comes right back because their policy is to place priority on address and not name

if i go to the postmaster it gets sent back to sender and takes forever for the people to get...

,...so ive resorted to just delivering it to them myself with instructions that they contact the sender and correct it so it doesnt happen again

I used to live in an area where all the streets were called the same thing <redacted> avenue, <redacted> gardens etc. Used to get other folks mail delivered all the time. Always managed to track them down by a process of elimination, if the postcode happened to be right.

    You did the right thing.

It was probably a big stuffed teddy bear for some child.

I've had parcels show up and I just take to the post office RTS.
Letters on the other hand, when we first moved into our house we diverted our mail for 6months. We also got a lot of the previous owners as could be imagined. Well I'd collect and drop it off to them as they left their address. Wasn't really too far away really I think they just downsized. Anyway after 6months of mailman duty, I throw them in the bin now. Had all that time to get their mail together. Mind you, none of it looks interesting.

I also had a delivery that was for a street that was similar to my address but it was suburbs over. They had a phone number on package so I called and they came and collected. :)

Everytime they made a mistake it was just a package for someone across or down the street.
I just take it to their place.
I aint opening anything that is not mine, somebody paid for that.

I had a pal who was a drug dealer. He always had shipments delivered to his home address with a different name on the package.
He would then leave the package sitting on the table unopened for 2 weeks. The UK police could only afford 1 week surveillance.
If anyone called and asked about the package "dunno mate, it isn't mine, haven't got round to dropping it back at the post office yet"

yeah, it was definitely your neighbor's weed and he was not expecting you to be home when it was delivered.

i've never gotten someone else's package. if i did, i would probably return it. all i get that i shouldn't is bills and junk mail addressed to random name at my address. i don't really see any way to find the proper recipient, so i just throw it away.

a few weeks ago i actually had a mailman knock on my door saying that a package was delivered to the wrong apartment and asking if it had come to me (it hadn't). i can't imagine what that package was that would make them actually go out of their way to track it down like that.

If I can get it to the right person I do it. I don't trust the usps though...they messed up the first time no reason to think they will get it right the second time.
One time I drove a couple towns over to drop off a package. It was the same po box with a different town.

It happens to me, too. Especially around Christmas time. When it does, I always open the package, and if it looks like a present for a child, I return it to the post office. But if I'm pretty sure it's not for a kid, it's mine. Last week one of those remote control helicopters was delivered to me. I figured that lots of adults buy those, so it's mine now. Come to think of it, Christmas isn't so bad.

Something tells me I should say that I'm joking.

Hey. That new hot toy could always be for an adult...to later give to a child. It's all how you rationalize. I don't judge. Hell I have kept $20. In a card sent to me one time. If I knew the person who it was meant for I would give it to them...that's how I rationalize.

Much like the time last Christmas when some guy at Walmart left his wallet in a changing room. I went in right after he left and saw the wallet. It was full of money--a hundred and some odd dollars. And I thought to myself, if I was the one who carelessly left my wallet in a changing room, and someone came in after me and found it, what would I want? And no matter what angle I looked at it from, there was no escaping the obvious answer. I'd want to be taught a lesson. So I kept the wallet and went shopping. That was a good day. He learned a good lesson, and I got a lot of free stuff.

For three holiday seasons in a row, I was delivered gift baskets with coffees and candy in them; actually, the name on them belonged to some bimbo that was using my address for her business. These were corporate gifts. I figured if she could use my address then I could have her gifts. I was really sad that she quit doing business with who ever was sending those baskets.

I was on to her because no one has ever lived at this address but me.

I would immediately return the package because my paranoia would get the best of me,
and I would assume UPS in cooperation with the local authorities were testing my character.

aeri, that reminds me of a story my mom told me about her boyfriend. he found out one day that a woman had stolen his identity to use credit to pay for her house. she wasnt ripping him off. she was making all the payments and was a model bank customer. it was just she was using his good credit to become that customer. i never did hear what happened when he found out about it...i will have to ask my mom.

hot water, does being black in a white neighborhood have anything to do with your paranoia?

Quote from the Movie 'Undercover Brother'

Undercover Brother: You know what they say, behind every great black man...
    Conspiracy Brother: is the police.
    Undercover Brother: No.
Smart Brother: A bunch of slow white athletes?
    Undercover Brother: No!

    Lance: Probable cause.
