...it was about comparable to the the time I drank a carton of beer. And I only had 6 shots. Some of you might know I made a "fake" absinthe concoction by soaking, wormwood, sage, aniseed (for thujone) and flavouring herbs in vodka. Well, it worked somewhat. I had a peculiar feeling of numbness and floating, whilst my thoughts raced around in an almost hallucenogenic dream state. I lay on the floor in the darkness in awe of the world around me for about 3 hours. Thats the best way to describe it...it certainly was a more opiate like experience then just pure drunkenness. But the following morning I had nausea so bad that I could only lie in bed shivering, and every mouthful of water or tea o drank just came back up. That lasted for about 3 hours after which I crawled to the shower and finally over to the toilet where I puked repeatedly for 5 minutes. Then i was depressed and nauseated for about 3 days. I've heard real absinthe does the same thing. If so, i am never touching the stuff.
I made the same concoction awhile back, it's not exactly "fake" absinthe, it's just not the commercial version. thujone is an interesting deleriant; it's neurotoxic in large amounts, which contributes to its stupor-like effect; it antagonizes GABA, an opposite effect of alcohol, so it prevents gaba from binding at some sites, causing excitotoxicity. If you felt a "hangover", that could probably be attributed to the vodka itself, as the metabolism of ethanol--> acetaldehyde is what gives hangover symptoms; you can prevent these sensations (I've heard from a chem grad student) by taking a couple teaspoons of honey before, or as you start drinking.
worst hangover i ever had was when i was 14 and drank a bottle of jim beam, and it was the first time i got DRUNK drunk, like pass out drunk, the next day was the worst ive ever felt, WAYY worse than a post-roll low.
