With pachanoi mescaline content varying widely from .2 to 2.3%, It seems pretty difficult to guage just how much mescaline one is taking with a 12 or 18" cutting, and this humble first-timer thinks it makes sense to attempt an extraction [the only one i'm familiar with is the one on erowid, so please note if you are talking about a different one]. My biggest worry here is that the how-to on erowid says that you shouldn't expect a greater-than-50% yield if you're inexperienced, and that seems wasteful. Can anyone who's tried it verify this? Also, is the doseage for extracted mescaline significantly different than for pure 100% mescaline? And lastly, i'm under the impression that the whole nausea thing is less intense/common with extracted content than with the whole cactus, and that's definitely an influencing factor (although i've heard that it's usually gone by t+2:00 anyways). Any thoughts or feedback would be great thanks and peace, RJ
"50% yield" refers to the percentage mescaline holds when compared to the total alkaloid yield of an extraction. San Pedro contains maybe 6 different psychoactive alkaloids working in a synergistic relationship for your edification. So, If you are in a country where extractions arent illegal, and if your extraction yields a total alkaloid weight of 1000 mg, then your mescaline content would only be around 500 mg. This 500 mg mescaline yield would be ".2-2.3%" of the total cactus weight that you did your extraction on. Any extracted mescaline would be 100% mescaline. Your dosage would only vary if taking into account the total alkaloid weight, as opposed to pure mescaline weight, i.e. if you have only pure mescaline then the dose you want is 300-500 mg. If you have a mix of extracted alkaloids then to have the same dose as the pure you would need to take 600-1000 mg; mescaline is only 50% of the total. Nausea is nausea. You suffer an initial uncomfortableness, and then... arty: Even if your country allows cacti shenanigans than youll still have to pay a price. If its illegal where you are, cease now. 5 years in jail aint worth it, possibly. Continue your research...
There are good teks out there... http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=261777&page=1&pp=10 But if you want a standardized product from a source of unknown potency, you'll want to go with HCL.
I don't know the exact quote you're referencing, but I think that the 50% yeild refers to only pulling half of what's possible to get from your plant. Here's one of the only breakdowns of the total alkaloid content of Peruvianus again. mescaline (0.82%), 2-chloromescaline (.02%), tyramine (.009%), 3-methoxytyramine (.01%), 3-4-dimethoxyphenethylamine, 4-hydroxy-3-5-dimethoxyphenethylamine (.004%). You'll notice that this sample contains a much higher concentration of mescaline than 50% of the total alkaloids. I don't have the exact statistics on Pachanoi, but SP and PT feel very similar to me. In peyote, on the other hand, mescaline is only 40% of the total alkaloids. Also read this: http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=294811
Thanks a lot for the responses. And thank you for the links C; the first was very informative and the second quite interesting.
