The TRIBE has spoken!!!

Hi all!

We've been lurking for a bit so it's time for an introduction. My wife and I are a couple of middle-aged (47 and 32) hippies from Boston, MA (Cambridge actually) who have been living in that red state paradise, West Virginia for the past 5 or so years.

Have we lost our minds, you ask? Well, the winters are mild, the summers are sweet and everything costs 2/3 less. Oh yeah. One minor pesky little thing.... we are SURROUNDED by red state conservative redneck fundies!!! Well, maybe not ENTIRELY surrounded, I can see a clear patch over there.

After buying a house here and initially trying to blend in, we said #$%& it and collectively rebelled. We painted the house bright blue-green, ditched the lawn and replaced it with a crushed rock Zen garden (ever have 2 tons of crushed gravel delivered to your front door by a guy whose only comment is "where do you want it, buddy?" 2 tons of gravel doesn't go anywhere, it goes everywhere). Since we are Taoists, we have a ying yang sculpture and a Buddha sculpture in front of the house (and we illuminate them at night, an idea we got from seeing all of the Xmas lights around us). Oh and just last week we got a great sign that we put on the front gate: "A Flower Child and an Old Hippie live here".
Yup, we blend right in.

Ok, while we get stares as the only kurta, dashiki and tie dye wearing hippies in town, we're actually enjoying our life here, alternating between bringing a little bit of liberal hippie diversity to this little corner of the Bible Belt monoculture. Sure we get some whispered comments but last week when two young girls at the grocery store, looked at us and smiled amazingly and admiringly "look, they're hippies!" we could not have been happier. Now, we just have to teach them little things like tolerance, equal rights, diversity and respect for all cultures. I guess choosing to live here is our own private protest against the right wing conservative Rethuglicans... oh and the fact we couldn't afford to buy a house in Boston and have something left over to survive.

So our tribe continues the good fight... we've gotten serveral reward challenges (better weather, cheaper cost of living) but the other tribe (Rethuglika) is determined to make life difficult for us..

Will we survive?? Time will tell.

Very nice intro and well written too, glad you finally found us....You sound like a couple of down-to-earth and real people and I'd like to get to know you both....I'm a 56 year young Hippie living on a lake in ruarl Minnesota with my 10 year young Dalmatian Pepper....Let's keep in touch, just PM me anytime....Allow me to extend the welcome mat….I know what it’s like to be a newcomer….You don’t really know what to say or how to act….Read some of the threads so you can get the gist of what topics are being discussed….When you feel comfortable jump right in and get your feet wet….Nobody here is going to "Flame" you (unless it’s necessary) lol….We get some assholes here who just want to stir up bad vibes and there are several (they go unnamed).…From what I’ve found so far is that we are one big family with many brothers and sisters….Once again the doors open come on in, open up your heart and mind, put on some groovy tunes, kick back and stay awhile….Peace, Love & Great Big Hugs, DDR
