Just a quick note to let you know that my mother's breast cancer surgery was a success. They took the lump and the surrounding lymph nodes. The doctors think that they got all of it, and it doesn't look like it's spread to the surrounding areas.

They didn't go camping! Thank God for that one! Mom is at home "resting". The home-care nurse is came by today to change the bandages and check the drainage tube. The doctor said that she will need to keep the tube in for 12 days, but Mom said that she read in some books that she might be able to get it out earlier if everything is healing properly.

Her chemo is schedualed to start in about a month, once everything is healed.

She sounds really positive and happy about it all!

Was there a chance it would be a failure? Is it possible they could not get that lump out of her chest?

She could have crashed on the operating table, failed to come out of anaesthesia. She could have bled to death. They could have nicked the tumor and released the cancer into her entire system. They could have found that not only was the lump cancerous but also entire tendrils of it right through the breast, in the lymph nodes, everywhere.

I'm really happy for your family.

I have some idea what you're going thru: My grandfather recently had to have surgery for lung cancer, and it was so scary for everyone. But the surgery went well, and he's healing well. Really relieving.

thanks everyone! We are pretty happy about it! The Dr. called today with some more good news... the lymph nodes are clear. So, the cancer hasn't spread.

The only remotely bad news is that when they took the lump, the didn't quite get enough healthy tissue around the lump in one area. So, they are going to go back in in about a week to take a bit more tissue out, just to be safe.

Radiations and Chemo are schedualed to start in about a month. Mom feels good, and is leaving tomorrow to watch softball until the first... still no camping though, they are going to be staying in a hotel! haha!
