This movie was panned by most critics. OK, if I were a critic I would likely say something like this movie "takes an A-list crew and cast ... and goes nowhere new with it, investing lots in VFX and locations but not enough in an original story anyone cares about" (The Hollywood Reporter). Or, "While Seventh Son has trace of Saturday afternoon fun, its unoriginal nature gets the better of it.. There are flashes where you think Seventh Son is going to be wise enough to put a spin on the standard script, but by the end it just devolves into another loud, messy CGI brawl...." (The Guardian). About the kindest review came from the New York Daily News, "Saints be praised for whatever strange magic brought Bridges and Moore together for their own little mini-Big Lebowski reunion, whether it was playfulness, paychecks or an open spot on their calendars. Because they save this mediocre medieval fantasy adventure from the ash heap."

Well, all that may be true - I can see it but some of us like "medieval fantasy adventures" to the point of just sitting back and enjoying the "loud, messy CGI brawl." I also liked the equally panned 2011 movie Season of the Witch which had a very similar setting and theme.

The movie opens with Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) known as a Spook, securing a demon in a cave with an iron grate. Time passes and the demon escapes taking her human form of Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore) and terrorizing the countryside again.

She and the Spook battle it out again but she gets away causing Master Gregory to need a new apprentice, a seventh son of a seventh son. He bargains with the Wards for their son Tom (Ben Barnes), whom we learn also has visions. His mother, Mam (Olivia Williams) seems all too aware of this gift of her seventh son.

Master Gregory and young Tom go off to dispatch witches and other monsters in the realm.

While separated from Master Gregory, Tom comes across townfolk about to burn a witch, Alice Deane (Alicia Vikander) whom he recalls from one of his visions. He rescues her, which could be a problem for an apprentice to a spook rescuing a witch. But, you can see where this is going.

This movie was in 3-D but as usual I avoided that gimmick. You can believe all the movie critics who trashed this movie and avoid it, or if you're like me, you can just sit back and enjoy the visuals of dragons, ghosts, shapeshifters and other assorted monsters battle it out with an old Spook Knight and his apprentice.
