So about 10 days ago I encountered spider mites for the first time in my grow. It is an indoor grow but it did happen. It has been 6 months since I've started. I ive in the country and I have animals and a garden so This was not unexpected. I will admit I have been a little bit careless as of late. But after dealing with these little bastards I will definitely be changing my habits. I did a little research and discovered what appears too be some 'new' miracle product that goes under the guise of Mighty Wash. I bought a 32oz Bottle and made a home brew of rubbing alcohol and water. I tested both and the Mighty Wash definitely out preformed the home brew. As far as i could see on the plants all of the spider mites were killed on the plants sprayed with MW and probably 80% of the mites died from the ISO water solution. I shelled out for a gallon of the stuff so hopefully I can eradicate these fuckers. Ill keep you updated on that front. (PLUG) I am also writing a journal at the moment for my current grow and I will have pictures too (plug over). Anyway, back too the main point of this post! I am a curious person and and DIYer, I don’t mind shelling out a bit of cash in an emergency; but if someone made it, it CAN be remade. With this is mind and my curiosity ringing I looked at the ingredients. It is over 99.98(?)% water and 'inert ingredients'. Even more curious that i just spent 20$ on 32oz and 42$ on a gallon of this water and essentially garbage I decided too pH test it. I am a soil grower so I had the supplies on hand.Too my surprise it was a very alkaline solution. the pH strips didn’t go above 8.1 but the red was definitely deeper(IE more alkaline). The only time I have ever heard of alkaline water being used was by my hippy friend. She told me about this machine that her and her husband had purchased that separates acidic and alkaline water(this gets deeper into chemistry but the water molecules pick up either a positively or negatively charged atom(again i forget if it is an H or an O but i do believe it is the O molecule) that makes the individual molecules acidic or alkaline and the average pH of these equal 7.0 in pure water. They used the acidic water as a cleaner and drank the alkaline water. They claim it too be healthier, I haven’t done enough research into this too know. What i do know is a machine brand new on the cheaper end is at least 800$ and they are called WATER IONIZERS. You can buy a britta filter-esk ionizer but you have too replace the filters in them constantly i hear, and they are expensive. Anyway back too the mighty way(see I bring you full circle), I did a little more research on it and found an old article about SOYBEAN growers using these machines to make the alkaline water and combining them with natural oils(in very small amounts as a 'wetting agent') and spreading them on their soy crops too kill.....WAIT FOR IT.... spider mites. THIS HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A VERY LONG TIME, apparently. So here is a recipe for you guys 1 gallon Alkaline water 1tsp coconut oil(or any organic oil substitute). heat too roughly 120* mix oil into water and stir or shake vigorously. DONE. Shake well before every use. Solution stays viable for 6months. MW has an 'inert ingredient' that helps it maintain pH for up to a year for shelf life. I do not know what this chemical is and do not really care. I am fine with this easy 2 part set up If you know some one with one of these machines you can potentially save your self hundreds of dollars on might control on a time tested solution. This approach does not work the same way as the poisons or oils. It does not shield the food supply or kill the mites with noxious fumes. The pH of the solution combined with the oil so it sticks better upsets the nervous system of the mites(apparently)so that they are unable too reproduce. Let me know what you guys think! I am currently using Mighty Wash but I WILL be making this solution next mite attack(if i cannot prevent it again and using it. I will update or repost. If anyone knows about this already post with your results. Any comments or feed back would also be very welcomed. Again, be on the look out for my grow guide!!
