I just Googled "dreadlocks neglect method"....with some of the nonsense I'm finding, I'm almost glad I followed DHHQ's advice! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080813231024AAQdeN1 And in the Knotty Boy site FAQ section, where it looks suspiciously like they may have substituted the word 'wax' with 'grease'... "Q: I started my locks with gel and grease. It's been 2 yrs and my niece who also has locks said she cut hers and inside was old grease and gel and smudge! I was grossed out! So I cut a tip on mine and it was the same! I really like them but I am totally grossed out. I rinsed my hair in boiling hot water, twice, and while the surface is clean and stuff, way, way down is still old grease and sludge! It smells good, looks good, but I'm grossed out...I'm thinking about cutting them, or I was wondering if there's some super cleaner? A: You know what? I wouldn't worry about it! If they look and smell great, who cares what's going on deep inside your beautiful locks? Here's a hint... all dreads look freaky inside if you cut them open, even ones that haven't been made with anything at all. All locks are is just matted hair which can look a little crazy, but I wouldn't sweat it and I sure wouldn't cut them just cuz they look a little weird inside. You don't see it, and neither does anyone else!" Er...ditsy much?
yikes some of those answers on yaghoo are so very stupid and the knotty boy? ok your dreads are all fucked up cause u used our products just dont worry boit it, noone will ever know they'll only be disgusting on the insidfe and rot away but its ok..look how pretty they look eeek i loved the 1 on yahoo that claimed neglect methodf will never result in dreads..hahaha thensaid u need to use special wax to dread what idiots i guess i dont really have dreads then huh..just messy hair and all those ppl that yell nice dreads everytime i step out the door just dont know what dreads are..
And this bit: "i do not have draedlocks but i know that if you get them wet they will not stay .i sugjest using a shower cap of some kind" ?!??! lmao

5 dreadlocks Myths 1. dreadlocks are dirty. Only if you don't wash them. BIG MISTAKE! Clean hair dreads faster than dirty hair. People who care about having healthy dreadlocks wash them at least twice a week. 2. You can't wash dreadlocks. False. You can wash any kind of hair. dreadlocks are no exception. If someone tells you this, assume they have no idea what they are talking about. 3. Not washing and combing your hair is the best way to make dreadlocks. This is how animals and people who don't know what their doing make dreadlocks. 4. Only black people can have dreadlocks. Completely false, anyone can have can have them. 5. You have to shave your head to get rid of dreadlocks. Not True! Check the FAQ for information about removing dreadlocks. I got this from www.theperfectdreadlocks.com WTF number 3????
Oh dear... lol Well, why not just "Twist, comb and wax on a regular basis to get your dreads to hold their shape. Remember that this hairstyle requires a lot of maintenance"
Number three is gonna be a tough blow for SE. Just imagine how upset he will be when he finds out hes been doing it wrong for 18 years, good thing they came along to save the day and i have rugby on tuesdays and thursdays so a shower is pretty much required after both, but if I wash my hair on tues, it usally doesnt need it on thurs, so a shower cap is perfect, unfortionantly they only came in powder blue and pink im sure they would be eeasy to make tho, once my dreads are longer
I am very sorry to hear this =( I feel for your loss. It was super tough for me, so I know of similar feelings And, yikes! Some of those methods seem so outrageous!!! I remember the age old 'peanut butter in the hair' and who can forget 'you can't wash your hair ever again' nonsense.
i wonder if anyone ever followed through with those, the myths have to come from somewhere right? and i wonder how they're fairing now
