This group was just started up by the blogger Barefoot Michael, and I thought it may be of interest to members of this forum...

It's basically to advocate barefooting and minimalist footware, and hopefully educate the masses to bring about acceptance. The website puts it much better than I can.

I think a proactive organisation is a great idea, and am very excited to see where it goes.

I just dont get it. I listened to some of these and it sounds pretty much like a big ad for these goofy shoe things. I thought going barefoot means going around with totally bare feet, not putting something on them. I guess if it gets someone to try going actually barefoot, its OK, but otherwise its like putting on something else minimalist, like flips.

Flips let you keep you feet uncovered---these other things cover them up, right? Am I missing something?

I'm not sure what you're referring to here... What did you listen to? I imagine the goofy shoe things are Vibram FiveFingers? A lot of the involved people are serious runners and need the protection sometimes. The VFFs have LOT of fans, but I look at them as a stepping stone for the masses.

I'm sure the alliance isn't trying to be a big advert - it maybe a good idea to forward your comment to them! A lot of it is to do with the "barefoot"(minimalist) running crowd though, who probably outnumber the full time barefooters somewhat.

The shoes cover your feet yes, but they also allow your feet to function properly - unlike flipflops which are very unnatural to walk in, let alone run! Some of us are barefoot purists, whereas others are purely interested in the function of the foot.

The running part I understand. Running is harder on the joints and protection is needed sometimes. I get all that. It's the simple walking barefoot part---just plain walking barefoot. I don't see how covering your foot, especially the bottom, makes you want to uncover it.

Well the soles are very thin, but you still have protection. For people who are apprehensive about going fully barefoot, it may be a more appealing venture... It seems you may be getting caught in a similar trap to the shoddites when they encounter a barefooter!

Anyway, the group is there to support everyone from diehard coldfooters to fairweather minimalist dabblers who'll never fully bare them (but hopefully might!)

Maybe we should start another thread about minimalist footwear. You do raise an interesting point, but it's not really related to the alliance.
