For anyone who hasn't read the book, I do recommend it. But for those who haven't, let me introduce the idea to you.... The thinking behind this book is that the Bible and all its characters - Jesus, Mary, the apostles, etc - are actually based on Pagan legend. Before the idea of 'One God', every civilisation had many dieties, one for virtually every aspect of life. The idea of there only being one single God that embodies all these personalities is a relatively new concept. There have been quite a few books published on this, although hard to find because they're not really 'main stream'. But books like Pagan Christ and The Bible - The Greatest Story Ever Sold talks a lot about the idea that Jesus and Mary etc are actually representations of millenia-old dieties, rather than 'modern' christian founders. Just wondering what everyone thinks of this idea.
I was thinking about this topic a few months ago when I read that Jesus and the Egyptian God Horus had something like 200 similarities with one another and Horus was written about centuries before Jesus was. Some of the similarities are supposed to be a virgin birth, twelve disciples, performing miracles like healing the sick and making the blind see, transfiguration on a mountain, death by crucifixion along with two thieves, resurrecting from the dead, and starting a 1,000 year reign in the future. Heres a website that has a chart comparing Jesus and Horus if anyones interested. Parallels between the lives of Jesus and Horus, an Egyptian God
thanks for the link, Sesen... yea, it's pretty trippy when you start comparing religions how similar they really are.
It is interesting, but I havent read the stories of Horus that prove its true, or any of the books religioustolerance.com used for that chart so I dont know how legit it is. I would like to read the proper texts but havent been able to find them online yet....probably because I havent been looking. If anyone knows anything about Egyptian mythology I would like to know if all those similarities are real or not. Might shed a different light on Christianity if they are.
*waves* Follower of Horus here Right lets have a look at this then..... Hmm, Horus concieved by a virgin? Nop, the Goddess Isis resserected her husband/brother Osiris and became pregnant by him with their son Horus. Baptised?! Horus was a GOD Mellenia before Christanity existed, why the hell would he of been baptised?! There were no witnesses to Horus' birth except the Gods themselves, and even then not all were in attendance as his uncle Set (aka Seth, Suketh) was hunting for him. (as a side note, Set's the egyptian version of Satan? erm...no He isn't. Set is a God of War and Storms. If you wanna know about the Egyptian Satan, do some research on Apep) Horus didn't raise Osiris from the grave, Isis did, and he became lord of the Underworld (the realms of the dead, not any kind of hell) afterwards. Strangely enough they've missed Horus' 2 main symbols off the list. The Hawk/Falcon, and the Sun. They've also not mentioned the Eye of Horus. As much as I think Christanity is based on a mix of acient religions, I really think comparing Horus and Jesus is like comparing chalk and cheese. Jesus was a healer and a preacher, Horus was a warrior
Thank you Trickster's Child. I kind of figured it was bullshit due to the lack of references to Egyptian texts but wasnt sure.
