Until 2013, the oldest individual tree in the world was Methuselah, a 4,845-year-old Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) in the White Mountains of California. Researchers at the Rocky Mountain Tree-Ring Research Group then announced the age of another P. longaeva also located in the White Mountains — this one 5,062 years old.

What Is the Oldest Tree in the World?

I saw that too, google is wonderful. The only thing with that answer IMHO is that it is limiting to what has been documented/located. Is it possible there is areas that have yet to documented? Are there older trees in the amazon or the rainforest?

I thought you had to count the rings to know the age. Aka you have to cut it in half to find out.

i assume there's a way to drill into it, although that's purely a guess on my part.

  9. I dunno, but I'm not sure it's age that counts, per se. Who has the tree encountered? What situations? I believe a tree has spoken to me before. A little pompous, maybe, but I didn't want to be rude.

Along the lines of age, imagine what the tree has been through. If a tree could comprehend the world around it how would it feel. Imagine a 4000+ tree....

Considering that a tree stays put in one spot it’s entire millennia of existence, it probably doesn’t have a lot of worldly wisdom to share with you

We've an ancient oak standing alone that tries to do the work of one thousand trees. Been here since the visigoth called their home and now it's standing in the way of another factory and I sit down by the highway and I hear them big CATs growl. Where the quail going to fly too and where do the rabbits run now? I watch them tearing all the hills up which used to be our church. Tearing up my grandpa's land, treating my grandpa's land like dirt!

  14. Trees know what goes on...why not? They're made of info...info exchanges info. Wars untold have occurred among trees.

  15. In your heart you know this to be true. It's kind of stupid actually to think they don't know what's going on. That's just kind of how trees are.

Measuring the circumference of the trunk a few feet above ground level is a good guide. As you suggested, drilling a small core is more accurate, but it needs to be properly plugged.
We have a plane tree on the bend of the Thames in the grounds of Bray film studios (near Windsor), At 630 years old it is believed to be the oldest healthy plane tree in the UK.
