Wondering if they will be able to finish it in time for the 10th anniversary of the attack.

One of the contractors says they will. I kinda doubt it. A planned 105 story building has about 35 stories right now and one story is being added each week. At that rate, it will take 70 weeks to finish.

Interestingly, one of the proponents of banning the Islamic cultural center near the WTC site was on the bullhorn claiming that it should be banned because the project might be completed before the new WTC is finished. His words during the protest were, "If we allow this to happen, what next? What next?!

The whole project is pathetic, it should not take 10 years to build something there. They built the empire state building in 18 months in 1931.
Its just an example of how fucked up this country is that we cant even pull together and get something done to honor a major tragedy

TPTB are building the memorial to cover up the fact that it was an inside job.

beside... i thought the planned memorial was two square holes in the ground where the footprint of the buildings were, and a green park.. do you have a link to this one??

The memorial is scheduled to be ready on the 10th anniversary. I don't know about all the other buildings.

    http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/42264/

    Excerpt:

"9/11 Memorial to Be Completed First

The September 11 Memorial and Museum will be the first of the structures to be completed. It has been promised for next year, on September 12, 2011, in time to mark the first decade after the three towers fell, emitting destructive plumes of dust amid the horror of the world’s people.

The mayor referred to the memorial as the “spiritual and emotional hub of the site.”

The heart of the memorial will be housed seven stories below bedrock, where portraits of the nearly 3,000 men, women, and children who lost their lives will be displayed.

Today, one of two steel tridents from the original tower foundations was lowered into place. The two large steel structures, salvaged from the wreckage after the Sept. 11 attacks, will eventually form the focal point of a 56-story glass pavilion topping the underground museum. The second column is scheduled to be installed on Wednesday.

Also, last week the first installation of 16 oak trees were planted in the open public plaza area around the memorial site. Each month more trees will be added, up to a total 400.

The trees symbolize the return of life to the site, said Joe Daniels, president of the non-profit corporation, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, which is charged with overseeing the design and financing of the memorial.

Two large recessed square voids, positioned where the foundations of the twin towers once were, will become large fountains that disappear into the earth."

good ideas.. that would have made one hell of a statement

i'm not so big on memorial ideas.. eventually the whole world will be covered in memorials if we put one everywhere that something has happened

might as well start putting these up now and change em out later when something happens

if they rebuilt the wtc's they would still be a sacred place to those who lost people there..

I agree. In 100 years, when everyone involved is long gone, who is going to care?
What about all the people who died on the Titanic?
What about all the people who died in WWI?

None the less, it was a shitty event. And why would anyone claim it not to be just because America has not suffered tragedies anything like other countries. I wouldn't rebuild them as they were, that is sickening to me. Not to say you're sick for thinking it, but I feel that would be disgraceful to so many victims. It happened, the world trade center was destroyed, and America WAS changed forever, despite you wanting to make a statement about recovering. The terrorists won that day, hands down. They still win, and not just in extremist Muslim form. I think it's better to actually move on from something than to try replicate a perfect America. And I think it's obvious there needs to be a memorial on the site, but not a memorial museum with the whole place dedicated to a terrible event, but something reasonable to commemorate the innocent victims and the hero's of the day. A whole to do would seem to me to be the type of American behavior the terrorists were motivated by.

And these Mosque protesters, act like they are defenders of freedom and fighters of terrorism. Quite the contrary dipshits, you are a magnet for hatred. You represent domestic terrorism, in a moral and psychological form. Good job! I commend the soldier back from Iraq who I read saying "He went into the military and to his duty in the field to defend the freedoms these people are trying to stop." The way they behave is as if they are still in the grip of terror, and the terrorists are winning, especially against anything good America ever truly stood for that they think they know so much about.

what makes them (the people who died in the building and planes) more special than anyone else who dies?

heroes?..you mean the firemen and police who were just doing their job?..you think they're lives are worth more because they chose to do their job?

people died...whoop dee doo...people die everyday and no one notices

The only way the terrorists may have won is by having the power to make us go to war and cause more innocent bloodshed.

inciting domestic hatred by supposedly peace loving christians, creating terror that day, causing a further divide of our people? They knew they weren't going to take down America but they definitely accomplished what they set out to, to cause a tragedy that would make us re-think. Lets be honest, since 9/11, as directly a result or not America has gone down hill, except maybe in the Olympics.

and BBAD, are you that stupid by your logic? it wasn't intended as some compare and contrast shit, not to mention most people who die get some kind of memorial, especially in the case of unfortunate circumstance and tragedy. This was a quite significant tragedy, as apparently you are blind to because apparently you lack empathy?

And what you think about people doing their jobs, that is an entirely shitty point. That doesn't make them any less courageous, courage was something in their sense of duty. You want to call that job, and akin that to mopping the floor at McDonalds, fine, just shows you're pretty darn defunct as a thinking person. And FYI the Police and Firemen are not the only ones that can be considered heroes on that day, if you were to actually do some reading or watch programs about the day You'd hear plenty of stories of pretty regular people stepping above selfishness to help others.

And you are going to think I am an angry American bitching at you because I am upset, silly, and overly emotional. Well I'm not upset, it's almost been 10 years since September 11th and I'm not an incredibly patriotic person anyways. My point is pretty regular, and I bitch at your idiocy because it is just that, something completely ignorant of how regular humans view tragedy. We all remember and commemorate tragedies when their anniversaries come around, but we each have different events relating to our own lives or country or whatnot. No god damn fucking shit

what's the memorial for anyway? a memorial perpetuates support for the war really. those people didn't die FOR anything they were killed. .. the dust has far from settled we don't need a memorial now. why did the terrorists do that? idk.. there's nothing to memorialize until this whole thing is a wrap. it's closing the curtain way too soon really. i wouldn't know what to think there yet other than the fact that about two or three thousand people died there
