Fingermouse and I were having a bit of a natter this morning and came up with a list of the most stupid commonly held beliefs. Which do you think is the most ridiculous or harmful of these beliefs and why?

If you have a favourite stupid, ignorant or annoying belief yourself, please post in the thread.

    Happy voting!

I hate it when people say 'it's human nature'

All human activity is human nature

I also hate this idea that nature is peaceful and harmonious, it isn't, it's violent and random

A lot of people seem to believe Disney movies...

Good call, a commonly cited idiotic belief[IMG]

A version of the 'naturalistic fallacy', the belief that all things in nature are pure and good and all things man made are harmful and less good. Demonstrably untrue by reference to plagues and vaccines...

I voted for "things were much better..." in the poll, because it has so many elements to it. It's the kind of feeling that really seems to justify living like everything is shit as a suspicious and paranoid cynic who believes that magazines, pop stars, the kids who use Twitter and medicine are destroying the very fabric of humanity.

    I love nature, it's so naughty. : D

I had to vote for obesity. It's obviously caused by fat people.

I'd like to add "everything happens for a reason" to the list. Thing is, I think it's true. It's just been taken completely out of context.

My favorite belief is that generalization and stereotypes don't exist.

^Another good one. That can only ever be a self-evident statement about the existence of causality, or an entirely meaningless platitude implying 'fate'...

Well, I'm willing TO BET MONEY that 2 out of those 3 were the oddballs that voted that the most important topic of their world concern was what cell carried the obesity addiction or whatnot- ROFL - WHO votes for that??

Ghosty- you are wicked clever- I LOVED your remark about the people who "make the large generalization that stereotypes don't exist"- BRILLIANT!!!

And Imaginary Being- you bring up the Subconscious- there is a subject upon I could TRULY expound - but as I am prone to hypergraphia (does anyone on HIP forum know what that is?)- let me just say this about that:
nothing excites me more than laying on a couch, vulnerable, talking about my most unusual, sexually charged thoughts to a man with a deep voice and a masculine accent...as long as I know he doesn't accept clients who are among the "worried well"- only true train wrecks...

Human Nature is a mix of good, and wretched evil, and we are naturally prone towards the evil because good takes either discipline or an act of personal conscience (redemption) - and it's just too complicated a subject..

which is why it's a unique combination of free will, psychology, personal responsibility, and all in all, for me, it TOTALLY, without a doubt, comes down to THERE ARE DYNAMICS THAT SCIENCE ALONE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN

Yes, I can't at the moment- but I will in a bit- may I ask you first- are you familiar with the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky- I'll list them in order as his most famous works HAVE to order due to their thematic/ideological content: House of the Dead, Notes From the Underground, Crime & Punishment, The Idiot, Brothers Karamazov?
Ive studied his work and his philosophy- immensly- and of course I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion- I respect that- however Dostoevsky, who is extremely complex, truly changed my life- but I will elaborate more later!
