Me either. That's the only reason I grabbed it. Next is bonfire blonde and it tastes like it spent time near a bonfire. Real smokey taste. Almost like a Lil liquid smoke was added. Smells like a burnt log. I wonder if they were going for that taste when they put it all together or if they tasted it and knew they had to name it that.
So it's a smoked beer. It is a specific type of beer. It gets its flavor from malted barley that is dried over an open flame. Schlenkerla, from Germany, is perhaps the most popular example of this style of beer. It's been around long before Sam Adams took their stab at it. A smoked blond sounds a bit gross, though.
Great lakes ... Edmund Fitzgerald.. watching some 911 shit them talking about Indian lake when I typed that out..
October fest is next. Above average for the style. Typical of Sam Adams. They don't do any styles bad but they don't do any great. I do like that they do over 50 different styles though...now if they were more readily available.
Their beers are so refined. They all taste the same in one way or another, regardless of the style they're going for. Like you said, nothing they make is really bad, but nothing they make is really good either (except Utopias). Their beers are very much geared towards the casual beer drinker. I would gladly take a bottle of Utopias if it were offered to me.
If I have ever seen a utopia I would have been able to review one. I see people talk about them and am like where the fuck did you see it? I have had sink the Bismark and atomic nuclear penguin but never saw a utopia in person.
Yeah, because it's not one of those beers that just sits on the shelves. You have to go to a beer store to get it, and it's usually sold out as soon as it's released, which is like once every other year, and in very limited quantities. You literally have to be there when it's released to get it. That is if you're willing to spend $200, which is about how much a 24 oz. bottle of it costs. I tried it a year ago when one of my local brew shops held a special tasting event for the beer's release. It was very good, but more like cognac than beer.
finally pulled out the maple ale. (when i get variety packs i just reach in and grab the first one my hand touches) i was really looking forward to this one the most and it is like PR and i mentioned. its a good beer. nobody can deny that, it could be better though. i can see myself going through a 12 pack of these like nothing. goes down very easy, nice and smooth not a whole lot of flavor...(if they only went halfway between this one and the caramel one i would be very happy) no strong smells, just a hint of maple in the taste. saranac is my favorite for these styles, they have gone down in quality over the last few years but still they do the medium to dark fall beers better than anyone that sells for less than $10 a six pack in mho. (except locals of course)
have any of you had the michelob craft pack? its been gone for quite a few years now but they actually made some very good brews...then all of a sudden they stop and start making ultra. WTF is up with that. i still like the amber bock but usually there is something better at any store that will carry it.
michelob craft, ive never seen it.. I sometimes get drawn by billboards to get some michelob but i havent yet.. juat drinking some Staub water beer right now..dont get over lit on work nights..
I have seen them but have had no desire to try them. They're just trying to cash in on the curent craft beer craze. I'd rather spend my money on the real thing.
Drinking Oaktoberfest, an Oktoberfest/Marzen beer from Firestone Walker. 5.0% ABV Pours a deep, clear golden-amber color with about an inch of head. Aroma is of rich, bready and caramel pilsner malts, along with some toffee, roasted nuts and earthy hops. Flavor-wise, it is very close to the nose, with lots of sweet caramel malts, some toffee, roasted nuts, and some breadiness. There are some faint grassy and spicy hop undertones in the finish. Mouthfeel is light-medium, moderately crisp, and with a rather vibrant, prickly carbonation. Overall rating: A-
Now drinking Tesla Hop-Charged Lager from Six Point, an IPL. 7.1% ABV Poured into my tulip glass a clear orange-gold color with about a two-finger head. Aroma is of earthy, grassy hops, with some slight citrus (orange, mango, guava), pepper and pine, as well as some biscuity, crackery malts. Flavor is zesty citrus and grassy, slightly herbal hops, resiny pine, some pepper, and some sweet, bready malts. Body is light, crisp, moderately carbonated, and finishes pretty dry. Overall, it is decent but not great for its style. Rating: B+
Now drinking Perzik Saison from Avery Brewing. This is a summer seasonal that has been sitting at the back of my fridge for the last month or two. This is a saison brewed with peaches. 6.4% ABV. Pours a cloudy, juicy orange color. Aroma is very estery, with lots of clove-like notes, some juicy fruit (namely peach and apricot), some mild funk, peppery spice, and some sweet malts Taste is very juicy with lots of sweet peach, clove, banana, apricot, white pepper and some funky esters from the Belgian yeast. Mouthfeel is light to medium with a decent amount of carbonation. Overall rating: B
Now it's Yuengling Oktoberfest. Fuck reviewing this beer. All I will say is that for the price, it is well worth it. A very sturdy Oktoberfest for the price. I would drink the shit out of this beer.
had the hoppy red from that variety pack today. i prefer malty reds so this wasnt the kind of red i normally like. it tasted like a good ipa to me.
