Drinking unjunct from carton. It's the darkest beer I ever had. Literally looked like oil coming from the can. Regular heavy stout very slight hint of alcohol taste. It's like guinness' bigger stronger darker brother. 42 srm.(carton is the only one I saw use that. 8.5 abv 60 ibu Interesting fact...this was brewed at two roads brewing company in Stafford Connecticut Makes me wonder what kind of deal they had with them. They don't say it's a collaboration If I finish early I might walk to the brewery. If I do i will ask how that came about...maybe it says on their site
Finally got around to drinking my own Heady Topper, and I must say I prefer it to the Focal Banger. Less bitterness.
Earlier today I checked out Iron Tug Brewing, a local brewery here in Rochester. Ordered several beers there, as well as a delicious meat lovers pizza.
I wish there was a sticky of good places that review beer on here and that recommend beers to match with foods for us non beer people especially.
thanks I will book mark that. Many of my friends do drink beer so it is nice to know what to buy them for a change or treat.
Drinking Nu-Tropic from Stillwater Artisanal. This is an IPA brewed with mango and passionfruit. 6% ABV Pours a hazy orange color with a moderate sized head which fades quickly. Aroma is of tropical fruits, namely mango, orange and passionfruit. I am also getting some fresh cut grass, green apple skin, and some cracker malts. Flavor is of juicy tropical citrus, with some added sweetness from the mango and passionfruit. I am getting candied orange, grapefruit rind, lemon zest, passionfruit, mango, wheat and cracker malts. Mouthfeel is light and crisp. Overall I was not too impressed with this. A bit too sweet for an IPA for my liking. B
Drinking Unjunct from Carton Brewing. This is an American Stout made with just four ingredients and NO adjuncts. This beer is the perfect example of how you can have a beer taste like something else (coffee, for instance) without actually containing anything other than malts, hops, yeast and water. 8.5% ABV Pours a pitch black color with a creamy tan head that settles to leave a fine layer of foam on the beer's surface. Aroma is of rich, smoky, dark roasted malts, espresso, dark chocolate, molasses and dark fruits. Flavor consists of sweet, dark roasted malts with lots of smoked flavors, dark semisweet chocolate, dark roast coffee, vanilla, plum and raisin. Mouthfeel is medium, creamy, slightly sticky, and with a soft carbonation. Overall a very nice stout with lots of smoky, dark roasted malt flavors. A-
Now drinking the Evil Twin / Westbrook collaboration, Imperial Mexican Biscotti Cake Break. This is an imperial stout brewed with coffee, cinnamon, almonds, cocoa nibs, vanilla and habanero peppers. I like my stouts on the warmer side, so I left this one out of the refrigerator for about an hour before opening. 10.5% ABV Pours a pitch black color with a tan one-finger head. Aroma is initially rather boozy smelling. I am getting notes of dark chocolate, spice, coffee, vanilla, pepper, and dark fruits. Flavor is... WOW, not at all what I was expecting, and not in a good way. I am going to be in the minority regarding this beer's supposed greatness. Seriously, all I am getting from this beer is booze, a strange bitterness combined with a cloying sweetness, and an almost unnatural level of heat from the alcohol and peppers combined. I am really wondering if there is something wrong with this beer. Is it an infected or bad bottle, perhaps? It is highly acclaimed, but to me it tastes fucking horrible. Completely boozy and way too sweet, with the pepper coming in quite strong in terms of the heat it brings to this beer. I am not sure I can fairly rate this beer, but I am not a fan. This just might be a $16 drain pour... for real. [ Perhaps I am just not a big fan of imperial stouts, but this represents some of the worst aspects of big imperial stouts.
AH, my review from the previous post has changed a bit as I have let the beer warm up to room temperature. Much of the booziness is gone, and a lot of the subtleties of the beer have emerged. It's amazing how much a beer can change based on its serving temperature. I never like to order imperial stouts when I go out because they're always served too cold. Still not amazing, but I will give it a B+
I am now drinking Irish Breakfast Ale from Resurgence Brewing out of Buffalo. This is billed as a "smoked Irish ale brewed with maple and syrup and coffee." 5.5% ABV Aroma is a rich copper / reddish-brown color. The aroma on this beer is AMAZING! Tons of fresh ground coffee, maple syrup, toasted, biscuity malts and lots of earthy aromas. Flavor is a nice combination of coffee, sweet caramel, toffee and toasted, biscuity malts. The maple syrup shines in the finish, along with some subtle flavors of vanilla bean. Mouthfeel light-medium bodied and smooth with a faint carbonation. I am digging this! Overall rating: A
