This movie is a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman (2012).

Actually, it starts as a prequel showing how Eric The Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) came to be and the history of Ravenna (Charlize Theron) the evil sorceress queen in the last movie and her sister Freya (Emily Blunt) who becomes an equally evil Ice Queen.

Freya and Ravenna have a falling out and Freya goes North to make her ice Queendom and builds an army by raiding villages and stealing kids to raise as huntsmen and female warriors. That is how she came by Eric and also Sara (Jessica Chastain), who are both the best of the warriors. Sara is an archer who never misses her target.

However, these two go against the embittered Ice Queen's discipline and fall in love and you know this is the future deceased wife that the Huntsman was mourning in the last movie.

We jump to the future, after Snow White (not seen in this movie) has killed the evil Ravenna and become Queen of her rightful realm. She has married her childhood friend William (Sam Claflin), who finds the Huntsman retired to the forest and reports that Ravenna's Mirror on the Wall is causing her problems and she needs it removed. The troops taking the mirror to Sanctuary never returned so the King sends the Huntsman to find it. He teams up with a couple of Dwarfs and the three of them set out on adventure, which I will not tell any more about, except you know they will have to confront the Ice Queen, Freya and her minions eventually.

The movie was OK. You would have to be disposed to watching an ancient Grimm Fairy tale mixed with Hans Christian Andersen's The Snow Queen. It made a good second movie to the original, with contortions of story to actually create a sequel to a movie that we thot had ended Happily Ever After. But, I guess I come mostly to see Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth.

The real critics didn't care that much for it. The aggregates at Rotten Tomatoes only gave it a 17% fresh and only 49% of audiences liked it. Their consensus was, "The Huntsman: Winter's War is visually arresting and boasts a stellar cast, but neither are enough to recommend this entirely unnecessary sequel." Oh, and this one ends with a narrative suggesting that they might try to milk it for another sequel.
