The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

What can I say about this movie? It was uncomfortably too long? (they used to give intermissions for movies lasting more than two hours). Actually, I already said all that needs saying in the first of this prequel to The Lord of The Rings trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

"This movie is in 3-D but I opted to watch it in 2-D. But you could see the scenes that were playing for that gimmick. ... It is visually stunning and the large scenes are just too much to take it all in.

However, I almost didn't go see it. I really don't like long movies and the run time with this one (as with all the Ring movies) is almost 3 hours long. ...

Also, just as Tolkien wrote this as a kids book, this is more of a kids' movie. Even tho the whole series of stories are fantasy, there is something more 'realistic' about the Rings movies and too many frivolously unbelievable scenes in this one. (Ref that Indiana Jones movie with the mining cars freewheeling down the track, even jumping a gap and continuing on and you will know of what I write)."

In the last movie it was a fight scene in the mountains, where things fell into place too conveniently. In this one it was a fight scene with Dwarves running the rapids in wine kegs while they and Elves were fighting off Orcs.

These 3 movies are dependent on ppl seeing the previous serial. Our band of Dwarves are still attempting to take back their mountain kingdom from the dragon Smaug (voiced by and motion capture of Benedict Cumberbatch) and reinstate their leader Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) as king. Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) accompanies them at the invite of Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellan).

As with the first movie this quest encounters many adventures from giant spiders to being captured by Elves for a while. But, they do make it inside the Dwarves kingdom of Lonely Mountain where all the gold is stored.

They also awaken Smaug who is not about to give up the bed of gold he has been enjoying. This of course entails another harrowing battle inside the mountain kingdom, the outcome of which you will have to wait another year to see.

Overall it was an enjoyable 2 hours and 41 minutes. Guess I'm hooked and now have to see the final serial There and Back Again, next year.

Well I saw it today and as I suspected it was just a continuation of the first prequel and ended just as abruptly. I’d give the movie a 3 out of 5 stars.

I might have been willing to give it an additional ¼ stars If that dragon only knew when to shut up.

It was better than the first instalment of The Hobbit franchise. It was a fun ride, I'll give it that, but man, some of those action sequences were just SO fuckin over the top ridiculous, it looked as if the characters were being controlled by some kid playing his PS3 and going for all the combo moves bonuses... Just utterly ludicrous, way beyond believability (and yes, you can make sword fighting look a lot more believable, see Game of Thrones for example).

Fun watch, but this franchise will never reach LOTR level. It's just like the new Star Wars franchise trying to recapture the magic of the old - ain't gonna happen.

I love how they did the dragon in this. The detail in his facial expressions really convayed his emotions, intelligence.., sadism. Finaly a dragon that doesnt look like a big, scaley cat/dog with wings.

Cumberbatch doing the voice was great too. I wish they would remake Wizard of Earthsea, and make the dragon kinda like smaug.

Only watched for the sexy Legolas.
It got boring after a while and lost my interest.
The ending was kinda funny though, a bit of unorganized chaos, dwarves did well for having half a brain.
It's just another movie to say that I watched, nothing particular special about it.
