There are no hippies only idealists.Hippie is only a fashion statement,a want to be hip.One of the 'beautiful'people.One of an elite group that is suposidly enlightened and therefore better then everyone else.It's just another ego trip that gets in the way of living life.When I was a kid we called them the establishment,but we were just another establishment.You had to have the hair,the levis,the right color love beads...Just one big fraud.Look at all the capitalists today.Where did they come from?They were "hippies"There is hippie idealism though.Peace and love.By following these beliefs,we don't become hippies,we become human. Really interesting points, gate68. I agree with a lot of what you say. It's true... people who adopt the hippie way of life, or whatever other social persona, are merely trading in one conformity for another - going from one herd to another herd, but herds all the same. It's probably near impossible to find an original niche to call your own anymore. Everything's been done already. Just as long as we're aware that that's what we're doing, and that we're doing it through conscious decision and not reaction, then it's allright. I suppose some hippies feel holier than thou, but that's a contradiction to the hippie mentality. The whole idea of a hippie is to be tolerant, compassionate and respectful of their fellow man, not feel more enlightened or superior. Anyone who does that IS on an ego trip. I guess the barometer is whether we are prepared to do something (no matter how small) to change those things about society we don't like instead of merely pointing at them in contempt.

My wife gets mad when I show my picture to young gals.I'm not sure where the term gate68 came from originally.It might have came from our group(picture 20 +-freaks living in the camps of Lake Tahoe).I think someone older in the group used it on us first refering back to 1968.We were a loose gathering,there were 3 gals that hitched from Florida 1 named Charmain(an ex prostitute from Florida who came out here to get away),another a refugee from Canada,a couple more guys that hitched from Michigan,just a little bit of everybody.There was 1 guy that had the best honey oil from Orange County.I won't mention any names J.Bong.
