Any particular breed you could think of that would go well with a hippie? I'm rather fond of the Egyptian basenji (although I've never owned a dog). I think a standard poodle might be a little too high maintenance. And presa canario has a bad rep...
Welsh Corgi...friendly and odd looking...perfect "Originally bred for herding sheep and cattle, Corgis are active dogs, and considered very intelligent." -wiki Puppy! though I'm more of a cat person... ^_^
I had a shephard/dingo/lab mix that was truely a hippie dog. He was concieved in Golden Gate Park and born at the Kaiser during the 1988 Valentine dead show. Japhy Ryder spent his first two years on tour and hitch hiking across the country with me. He was with me for 15 years. May he rest in peace.
I would say any dog, regardless of breed, that you saved from the streets or the dog pound. That would seem to me to be in the true spirit of what we are supposed to stand for, rather than getting a purebred designer dog. Or at least save a dog to go along with a purebred that you got. My wife and I have 7 dogs, 2 are purebred that we bought, 5 are rescues that no one else wanted.
Rubin, you forgot Sam. A dog fit for the arsenal of any self-respecting hippie. Meh...I dont believe in a "hippie" dog. Not everyones going to like the same kind of dog just because theyre hippies. Get a Great Pyrenees xD The most adorable little (big) doggies. Emus will also suffice.
I've always grown up with German Sheppherds and we had a Mutt when I was very young. So hehe Naturally I would say a nice German Sheppherd hehe. Big, Loyal, Daring, Loveable, very smart and availeble in lots of shapes and Sizes (From the White ones till the Long Haired ones ). But then again so are mutts and they are not prone to diseases, survive almost anything (Mutts get the highest age of all dogs) and usually quite brave little dogs .
I have a shih tzu, and when her hair was pretty long (I keep her clipped up now), I braided a little bit of it...she really looked like a hippy dog! But seriously, any dog that is loving, sweet and your very best friend is a hippy dog, IMO... :daisy:
I may not know the breeds, but most of the rope headed puppy pullers had dogs named Cassidy, and later, Wilson. but the idea of a particular breed being a hippy dog is ridiculous. as Mouse said, rescues. and for every dumb ass who is taking their new puppy on tour, feed em, give em water and don't go into all day shows and leave the dog in the lot. Oh, and don't leave without them. At the Dead three years ago more than 50 dogs were left in the Red Rocks parking lot. travel in groups and rotate someone to stay with the animals you claim to love so much.
I am a cat person basically, but when I looked through a dog breed book, I came up with this Basenji dog you mentioned , and decided if I was to get a dog, this would be it. It looks so intelligent, and it also does not bark, or shed its hair. It also cleans itself like a cat, so is usually good smelling too. There is one great hippie dog.!
I would have thought sheepdogs or something cos they're associated with the earth, farming etc or old english sheepdogs i dunno im talking bolloks probably! a dogs a dog at the end of the day who cares!
Yeah! I have a shetland Sheepdog. He looks kiiinnnnda like this. Not as poofy. and he's fatter....hey, he's 9, he can let himself go a little.
I'm sorry to disappoint you folks but the official hippie dog is the Irish Setter. You are in violation of Hippie code 68 subsection 4f if you choose another breed.
I realize they have a bad rep but I have a Presa Canario and she is the sweetest most laid back dog i've ever seen. She's incredibly low maintenance, perfect behavior, never barks/howls for no reason, and she's VERY protective......both of my kids play with her and they are very young (1 and 5), my 1 year old pulls on her gums, ears, whatever and gets puppy kisses, my 5 year old has been known to stage dive off the couch onto her. She's my best friend (next to my wife), she always sits right next to me or at my feet, ladybug is definitely a hippie dog.
