I'm not as familiar with modern metal as I'd like to be, but I've grown rather fond of Mastadon. If only because this is the best album concept I've heard in a long time :

"The album follows a quadriplegic who learns astral projection. On his journey he flies too close to the sun, burning his umbilical cord which connects him to his body, and flies into oblivion. At the same time in Czarist Russia, Rasputin and his cult were channeling spirits and brought the quadriplegic to their time. He explains his situation and foretells the assassination of Rasputin. as far as modern thrash goes, Havok Is PURE high, tight, shredding. THey definitely have elements of testament, slayer, etc... These guys are the most pleasing to my palatte, but unfortunately they cancelled their show opening for suicidal tendencies.. I was more excited about Havok than I was for ST.. but ST was awesome, and their new album is fucking amazing as well! They recruited dave fucking lombardo, so there's that... but back to havok.... Listen to this purity. This whole album doesn't have a weak moment on it! The music fits together so well its just perfect! Notable songs are DOA, Time is up,

then there's this masterpiece! THe magic starts at 18:30 but yet again, the whole EP is epic! THis is from like '07 so its a little bit less refined, but they use the "testament sound" on this one. Edit-! it's not embedding, but I recommend it highly! plz don't overlook!
