That's the problem. You're in a place of privilege and yet you think you're being treated like me because "the left" as you call it, want republicans to take responsibility for their actions. That's very different. I had my car scratched because I have an equality sticker on the back, but most conservative people I know would say that's just them practicing their beliefs. And yet if their car got scratched because they had a sticker saying "Fuck democrats, and I hate gays" then they would cry discrimination. I want freedom from harassment, and people like that want freedom to harass and they think it's the same thing. So I'm sorry but calling us crybabies isn't going to work. We have valid reasons for complaint. No one stops them from going to church and practicing their religion, we just expect not to have it forced on people who aren't Christian.
What about Sanders? She agreed that the cake shop was right to refuse service to a gay couple, and when she got kicked out of a restaurant the other day because the gay workers were uncomfortable, she had a problem with it. It's pure hypocrisy. Either we all have the right to refuse service, or no one does. Republicans have to stop thinking they're entitled to do whatever they like and then whine when other people do the same to them.
This is the kind of stuff we should be fighting, not self indulgent wedding cake blues: Mother of 10-Year-Old Who Came Out as Gay Weeks Before Death Charged with His Murder and Torture
Yeah, that's been all over the news here. That's absolutely horrific. I've noticed that gay bashing is on the rise again--at least around here. Back in January a kid was killed by his best friend for coming out to him.
Quite frankly, I'm having a hard time believing your conservative friends said that, let alone unironically. Of course I don't know you or your friends but if they did said that, maybe they were being tongue and cheek with you. They're saying that if you're truly for equality than why would you complain if someone scratched your car because they're practicing their beliefs Again, I'm having a hard time believing this without evidence. You're not forced to buy from that particular bakery. If you don't like their politics and beliefs then go somewhere else. We do this all the time. You don't like the food of a certain restaurant, you don't go there; you don't like the customer service of an online company that you bought something from, you don't buy from them; you don't like how the employees of a store treats you, you complain to the manager and if nothing is done then you don't buy from them.
Been awhile since I heard the story and quite frankly I don't really care what politicians say and believe. However, was Sanders saying that the restaurant should be forced to serve her? Or was she just upset that they refused the serve her? Being upset over something doesn't automatically means that ypu want said something to be banned. I'm sure there are things that make you upset but you don't banned.
You may see those signs, and in most cases they may be right. But if those establishments are open for business to the public and they refuse to serve African-Americans, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, women, etc., they'll be in violation of federal law. Those are protected classes under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. If, on the other hand, they refuse to serve liberals, conservatives, libertarians, Democrats, Republicans, Socialists, etc., that's their privilege. Those are not protected classes under the Civil Rights Act. Neither are gays! So what's the deal with the baker and the wedding cake? Gays are protected from discrimination under Colorado law. Hence the emphasis on whether or not religious convictions trump duty to serve all members of the public. And the Supreme Court hasn't really settled that. It just said that a determination by the Colorado Civil Rights Commission was motivated by anti-religious animus and therefore unconstitutional.
I have nothing agains such couples. I think LGB people should have the same rights as heterosexual people. Today in some Europien countries became permitted for persons of the same sex to marry. As far as I know Denmark has been a preferred place to be wed by gay and lesbian couples from around the world. More info here https://daenemarkheiraten.de/en/lgbt-wedding-in-denmark . My close friends got married in Denmark a few months ago, they received an international valid marriage. Approval by the Danish authorities took 10 days and the actual ceremony took only 25-30 minutes.
