Freeeeeeeeduohm now or soon sumeday at least, But in the words of that great thinker, Rodney King, can't we all just get along? We all have a common Enemy. The Bush Crime Family, The Neocons, Big Brother, The Religious Right, and a society that has gone crazy with judgementalism. We must all hang together, or surely, we shall hang alone. Can there be a meeting place for the people who have a common goal, who believe in the same cause, who stand for the same beliefs? There must be. I was antiestablishment before most folks knew there was an establishment. I was one of the original "beatnicks" . My awakening came in 1963. I was 17. I lived in the coffee houses and tenaments of Paris. LSD was a brand new thing, and possession of pot, in any amount, was a felony. Even from Europe we saw the New World Order coming. Even under Kennedy. We knew we were being sold out. We wrote poetry and folk songs. Bobby Dylan, Joan Biaz, et al, voiced what we stood for. We had a place called the "Fifth Estate" on the "left bank", in Paris. We had a place called the "Thirsty Ear" on some side street near the Seine river. This was before anyone knew about Vietnam. We were pissed that black people were being killed. We were pissed that we were seeing the poor being destroyed by the rich. We were pissed that we were seeing a real class system being established. We were pissed that growing a beard, having longish hair, or being a chick, being very opioniated, was not acceptable. This has been a long struggle, and we haven't won. Fighting among ourselves was not an option. And has probably hurt our cause. Just because we demand the right to speak, doesn't mean that we speak carelessly, or that we sell out our brothers and sisters. Unity is the only thing we have. And, so, tho I have attended rainbow gatherings, I expect more of you. I expect you to continue the fight we began in the early 60's. Most of us who were there at the beginning, years before the "fun" of Woodstock, are counting on you all to take this much more seriously. Stop fighting one another, and unite in fighting the injustice and the prejudice and the cruelty that has overwhelmed our lives
The thread has a nice idea to it, but the problem is that in order to have this so called ideal or perfect united society is that everyone maintains to have the same opinion about how to live. I'm very much against the war, hate the fact that more money is spent on military than education or health care. Not a big fan of eating meat (that whole cruelty to animals thing) nor am I one to normally make negative waves with my neighbors. But there are many people who think that this sort of thinking is wrong. Take a family who, for generations, have had careers in the military, and who think that a country w/o a military will fall apart. There are people who truly believe that being religious (pick any religion) is the only way to live, and if you don't live your life in accordance to the Bible or the Torah or any other holy scripture you're living a life in damnation. And being vegetarian or vegan in our society is still looked at as being a bit weird. So according to these groups of people, I'd be completely wrong, and on their behalf, they can't for the life of them figure out why the fuck I'm thinking the way I'm thinking, why I'm raising kids as liberally as possible. It's the whole battle between Republican and Democratic - who's more right?
The problem is neither side will bring us to a utopia. IMO people have to stop expecting it. There will never by utopia and as you stated whose utopia would we adopt, there are so many ideas. I am just trying to raise my kids to think independently of any set in stone philosophy and to think for themselves. I don't think either the Republicans or the Democrats have anything figured out. As far as discussions I usually don't agree more the 60% with either.
quite true. It's in human nature to want a utopia but also in human nature to be destructive and make problems I think thats how we best live, to be always solving problems, but always needing new ones to solve once the old ones are solved.
that's too much to get my head around , so i try not to, just try and live in the positive light, i'm getting too old for the fight, that's for the young, i just want the rest of my days to be peaceful, full of music and love that's close to me, let the young fight the fight, just my 2 cents
