The U.S. had a record high 62,751 new coronavirus infections on July 8, 2020.

Live updates: U.S. sets another daily record for coronavirus infections

    excerpt:

"In Texas, where the virus is raging and the death rate has been rising steadily, one doctor working the front lines warned of a looming disaster. “Texas is on a collision course with a viral iceberg,” John Abikhaled, president of the Travis County Medical Society, said in a dire video address.

A record 62,751 new infections were reported across the United States on Wednesday, including 9,979 in Texas and 11,694 in California. The total number of cases has now surpassed 3 million in the United States, where the death toll is approaching 130,000.

The battle over reopening schools intensified as experts warned that bringing students back to classrooms could prove disastrous in some states. President Trump and senior administration officials continued to push for a return to full will in-person learning, undercutting advice from their own health experts.

Some members of Congress are urging government agencies to “press the pause button immediately” on ordering federal employees to return to their regular worksites.

Health-care workers are once again facing shortages of masks, gloves and other protective equipment — a frustrating recurrence of a struggle that haunted the first months of the pandemic."

100% correct; and we won the Korean War. . . . Not.
Oh, we beat Granada, and Panama, and Iraq.
I could do that with my militia.

Details about the Maryland and DC case that implicated the need for Trump's tax returns.

Trump to ask Supreme Court to stop emoluments lawsuit claiming president profits unlawfully from DC hotel

    excerpt:

"Maryland and D.C. argue that Trump has unlawfully received payments from foreign and domestic governments that have done business with the Trump International Hotel, a high-end property located near the White House.

The Constitution bars presidents from receiving emoluments, an archaic word for types of payments, from foreign governments or U.S. states. Trump’s attorneys have argued that the obscure constitutional provisions at issue do not apply to commercial transactions like booking hotel stays.

A three-judge panel of the Richmond-based 4th Circuit threw out the case in July, but Thursday’s decision by the full court revived the suit.

Judge Diana Motz, who wrote the majority opinion, said she found it “puzzling” that the president argued that the case would subject him to intrusive discovery.

“The President has not explained, nor do we see, how requests pertaining to spending at a private restaurant and hotel threaten any Executive Branch prerogative,” she wrote."

Trump initially said he would be glad to disclose his tax returns.

His stance changed circa February 2016.

The Supreme Court just shut the door on seeing Trump's taxes before the election

The Supreme Court just shut the door on seeing Trump's taxes before the election - CNNPolitics

    excerpt:

"So, what the Court did is make it very likely that a grand jury may, at some point, see Trump's tax history. And that Congress won't -- at least no time soon.

Add it all up then and that's a very good thing for Trump, who has fought tooth-and-nail for years not to let the public see any details of his past financial life.

It, of course, wasn't always this way.

"We're working on that now," Trump said in late January 2016 of the release of his past taxes. "I have big returns, as you know, and I have everything all approved and very beautiful and we'll be working that over in the next period of time."

But sometime between late January and mid-February 2016 -- the space of just a few weeks -- Trump had begun to change course.

"You don't learn anything from a tax return," he said at a GOP debate in February 2016. "I will say this. Mitt Romney looked like a fool when he delayed and delayed and delayed and Harry Reid baited him and Mitt Romney didn't file until a month and a half before the election and it cost him bigly. ... As far as my return, I want to file it except for many years, I've been audited every year. Twelve years or something like that. Every year they audit me, audit me, audit me. ... I will absolutely give my return but I'm being audited now for two or three [years' worth] now so I can't."

And that was it. Trump has spent the last several years insisting that he can't release his taxes because he is under audit by the IRS. (Call the Guinness Book of World Records because this has to be the longest audit on record!)."

Trump used the same vague remarks about the coronavirus, that it will disappear ultimately.

Trump stated that U.S. schools should reopen because some European schools have reopened. He didn't draw any distinctions between the two.

From David Leonhardt of the New York Times, July 9, 2020:

"The good news is that the experience in other countries suggests that it may be possible to reopen schools. Germany, Denmark and others have done so without causing big new virus outbreaks, as President Trump noted yesterday.

But those other countries have taken two steps that the U.S. has not.

One, they have first reduced the overall rate of new infections to low levels: Germany reported 35 new cases per million residents over the past week; the U.S. had almost 1,100. (The Times updates this map every day, tracking the virus around the world.)

Two, some of those other countries have allocated new money for schools, as I heard after surveying some of my Times colleagues around the world."

In contrast, Trump has threatened to cut off money from schools that don't reopen.

From David Leonhardt of the New York Times:

"Here’s how to understand it, based on two main causes — and one big caveat:

Medical treatment has improved. Doctors and nurses often diagnose the virus more quickly than they did a few months ago, thanks in part to more widespread testing. They have also had some success treating symptoms with remdesivir and other drugs. “The sooner you get treatment to people, the better they’re going to do,” my colleague Apoorva Mandavilli, a health reporter, says.

Older people are being more careful. The virus is usually rougher on older people, and many have responded with extra caution. As a result, they make up a falling percentage of new virus cases — which has helped reduce the death rate.

The caveat: Deaths may be on the verge of rising again. The flip side of the greater caution among the elderly is that many middle-aged and younger people are acting as if they’re invulnerable. Their increased social activity has fueled an explosion in cases over the last three weeks, which in turn could lead to a rise in deaths soon.

The timing remains unclear. In the spring, the trend line for deaths lagged the trend line for cases by only about a week. But that may have reflected the relatively modest number of tests being done at the time.

With testing now more widespread, it’s possible that the death data will lag the case data by closer to a month. (In a typical fatal case, the death comes three to five weeks after contraction of the virus.) If that’s correct, coronavirus deaths may start rising again any day.

Even the one piece of positive virus news is looking shaky."

Trump didn’t change his mind, he was lying back in 2016.

He never had any intention of releasing his tax returns

The SCOTUS in a 7-2 vote opened the door to NYC prosecutors to go after his returns, and determined that no one, not even the president is immune to prosecution.

Kanye West in his announcement that he's running for President said that he is no longer a Trump lover.

In Trump's mind, there go all those Black votes that he (mistakenly) thought he was going to garner with his 'Blacks love Trump' initiative.

More threats from Trump directed at schools that don't reopen.

He also threatened to send in federal government forces to states that don't sufficiently handle to his liking the racial tensions and violence across the nation.

    Trump tweets:

“Now that we have witnessed it on a large scale basis, and firsthand, Virtual Learning has proven to be TERRIBLE compared to In School, or On Campus, Learning. Not even close!”.

“Schools must be open in the Fall. If not open, why would the Federal Government give Funding? It won’t!!!”

“Get it done or the Federal Government will come in and get it done for you!”

Trump's planned rally in Alabama in early July was scrapped due to concerns expressed by local officials over rising coronavirus cases (a rise due in part to the rallies he promotes which spread the disease).

Trump's rally in New Hampshire scheduled for July 11 to replace the Alabama rally has been delayed at least a week due to a tropical storm.
