the catcher in the rye

i'm currently reading this book but I'm not really enjoying it. I think it's overrated. What makes it so great?

 

I don't know. I really liked it. I thought that it really stayed interesting, for some reason. Also, I felt like I could really relate to Holden.

 

I hated this book, i read it in advance so that i would know what were talking about in school and it was so boring every day i fell asleep

 

It really relates well the adolescent urge to run away, and the fear that you don't belong anywhere and there is no point for your life or anyway you can fit into the world's plan.

I don't know why, I just love reading it. I love the way he talks about his sister, and just all the little descriptions of people, and how he just talks to you so naturally. I just love it.

 

I hated it! I just bs-ed my way through it!

 

This goes to show that women have terrible taste. The Catcher in the Rye is a great book. I really don't like reading novels, but I loved reading this. It's just great. Maybe you just have to be an adolescent male to appreciate it...

 

But . . . I'm a girl . . . do I not count?

I thought it was a good book, I like the language, the feel of it, the time period.....

I really liked the book, and as others have said, I felt I could identify with Holden. I loved his descriptive language, and his perception of life was very interesting...

 

Its the only book that I have put down. Couldn't stand it. Read it for fun and stopped 2/3's through it. I know it is a slice of life, but the Holden wasn't tring to help his situation. Im probably reading the book from an "educated", good background point of view, but he wasnt tring for anything.
What happened in the end?

 

i read it a while ago and its definitly one of my favs.
it was the first book i actually wanted to continue reading when i started. it was all about holden, i felt like he was so real.

i cant read books all the way through, but what i read of the catcher in the rye was brilliant

 

anyone else find that reading novels in school ruins the novel? I hated...HATED this book when we did it for school, but then when I read it a few years later, I loved it. Maybe it was the homework that ruined it. Any thoughts?

 

I thought it was a good book mainly because it was a very quick read. I would have finished it in one night if I had the time. But overall, it's not really the type of book I enjoy reading (to be overly general about it...). It is simply a good book but not great

 

Oh yea! well i read it in school because we HAD too...but i ended up really liking it, and I couldn't really put it down! I mean, its weird because it isnt really about ANYTHING. But I just like the way Holden talked because it was so average, like a regular guy would talk like. It wasn't all fancy and didn't have any fancy words and stuff. Though, it was kinda weird because while reading about his bad opinons about people and stuff, after awhile i felt the same way he did...like alienatied(sp) from everyone and kinda depressed. And everyone started to make me mad for no reason. But after I was done with the book, and after a few weeks, I was normal again! Ah weird! But def. one of my faves!

 

I like the book, but Holden's whinyness (is that even a word?) bugged me.

 

I read this book when I was about 14. It was at the begining of my "loss of innocence" one could say and at a time when I started to see how the world really is. I was very depressed as you probably can imagine, so a friend (now my b/f) mentioned this book to me. He said it is "something you will relate to" as he knew I was feeling very alienated from the rest of my community. I read it in its entirety. I felt like I could in fact relate to Holden Caulfield. After reading this, I also read "The Bell Jar" by Sylvia Plath. That is also a book I think is of this calibre. Anyone insterested in this type of literature I would recommend reading The Bell Jar
