YOU MAKE THE CALL???

    Rainbow rental returns wrecked

    By Matt Stensland

    Tuesday, July 11, 2006

A few casualties emerged from the woods in North Routt County on Monday and made their way to a Steamboat Springs collision repair shop.

A man who said he was coming from the Rainbow gathering, 35 miles north of Steamboat Springs, looked beaten up and was not talking clearly because his face was swollen when he entered the Custom Color shop Monday, said the shop's owner Dave Mihaich.

"All his front teeth were as loose as could be," Mihaich said.

The man's rental car was in bad shape, as well. Mihaich estimated the cost to repair damage to the 2006 Ford Focus at $15,181.06.

The damage was mostly cosmetic, but the car, which retails for $9,400, was totaled.

The man, who Mihaich described as "filthy" with dreadlocks down to his thighs, said the damage occurred to the car after he visited "A-camp," where drugs and alcohol were prevalent. The man also said he was beaten up there, Mihaich said.

"He pulled into A-camp, and they pretty much pummeled him," Mihaich said the man told him.

The week-long gathering attracted an estimated 15,000 hippies and counterculture enthusiasts.

It officially ended Friday, but some gatherers are staying to clean up.

John Centner, general manager of Steamboat Motors, said the man rented the car about a week and a half ago.

Despite concern expressed by many business owners about gatherers coming to town, the business rented the man the car.

"He had all the right credentials. We wanted to be good stewards, and we didn't want to be discriminatory, so we rented him the car," Centner said.

The car was not returned on time, and the business charged the man's credit card for the additional days.

After a charge was declined Friday, Centner said the business reported the car stolen to police.

    The car finally appeared Monday.

"I was shocked to see the damage," Centner said. "Every panel on the car is dented. In 27 years of being in the car business, short of a wreck, I've never seen that type of damage to a car."

Centner said it was too early to tell whether the renter had insurance. The car runs well, but it likely will be treated as junk and auctioned for salvageable materials, Mihaich said.

The car was covered in dust, the spare tire was missing, and nearly every window was missing or had been smashed.

There was broken glass, and an odor lingered in the car.

"You kind of feel gross just touching it," Mihaich said.

All that remained inside the car was an empty Swiss Miss hot chocolate packet, a fist-sized rock sitting on the floor of the back seat and a bag of pure sugar cane in the glove box.

"They just absolutely trashed this car, and everyone paints a real rosy picture, and I just thought people should see the remnants of the Rainbows' visit to Steamboat Springs," Centner said.

An a-camper with the right credentials to rent a car? Not old a-camp style at all; buying a limo for beer runs is old a-camps style, 'borrowing' someones rental for beer runs maybe, but most of those were returned in good order with a full tank of gas

Either a dreadie-feddie or a dreadie drunk who didn't know what he was getting into

I have reason to believe this was Thomas JAH LOVE! from NoCal. At any rate, something like this hapened to Thomas in CO. His worst habbits, as far as I know, are shouting JAH LOVE! at the top of his lungs all day for no apparent reason, and smoking lots and lots of really good pot. Not a bad guy.

Just to dispel more rainbow rumors, YES there was indeed and unfortunately a keg at main circle. NO nobody was selling the crap. And, the person who got beat up was none of us who were there asking them to take it away. That happened a day later, though it did have something to do with alcohol, of course.

the thing with the keg at main circle.... it was not being sold... no one got beat up... it was sort of for Luke, but also to prove that there can be alcohol without violence, and that we should not be "herded" into one specific area just because we occasionally want a beer! I personally think it's unfair. the agro-drunks should stay up front, yes... but I don't think it's wrong to be at my own camp (OR my own kitchen for that matter) and have a drink or two... and as long as none of us get agro... no one else should care either.... and yet....
anyway... I just thought I'd clear that up....

    Is social order an issue?
So its ok to drink, but not get drunk? Sounds like the fucking bible.

Very sad that "a person" could have such a negative impact on so many. Now so many shall believe that anyone in dreads ect acts in such a manner and they will react accordingly.

I have heard stories from locals here about such things but just assumed it was the locals ignorance and Im still sure alot of it is. I know the whole thought of "policing your own" is another negative action but seems some need daycare providers and not for children.

I would hope anyone going into another area would treat it as though they are in anothers home. Respect the area, the people and customs. I mean enjoy yourself but if you go into town, yelling profanity in the town, flashing locals, stealing ect seems rather a bad move to make other future sites desire to accept you.

I know we are talking thousands of people and sadly not even maybe 3% are foolish enough to act like something in need of mental help but I guess outsiders look and see it then assume the whole group is that way. I assume they look at it this way because of others comments and not caring to look at the individual.

Hell Im not saying anything you all dont already know, have known and deal with all the time, sorry for taking up space.

I saw the kegs being brought down to main circle and I didn't see anything bad happen. I had a bottle of wine at my camp and I wasn't aware of the "no drinks" rule and someone saw my bottle and freaked out on me like i was doing crack or something. So I saw people running full speed and jumping up and down screaming that they lost their minds in the area that I was camping at....so it's ok to be on lsd or whatever they decided to ingest, but i'm wrong for wanting to drink some wine?

Do people get jumped like that at a Rainbow Family gathering?I've never been to one before but if that happens it seems like the only safe way to go is with a lot of people that have your back.
