A few of mine would be...

    Can - Tago Mago (1971)
Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (1970)
    The Who - Quadrophenia (1973)
Pink Floyd - The Wall (1979)
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland (1969)
The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (1999) (actuallly a triple album)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000)

My top 5 would probably go...

    The Clash-London Calling
    Rolling Stones-Exile on Main Street
    Led Zeppelin-Physical Graffiti
    2pac-All Eyez on Me
    Pink Floyd-The Wall

One double album that tends to be significantly overrated imo is The Beatles-White Album

The Orb's- Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld is also a great double album. Amazing electronic album way ahead of it's time.

Waoowww nothing modern ...man... early 70s stuff obviously...xpt the late 70s Zappa records...

but i understand you the 70s were probably the richest period for music...

I don't have a definitive idea for this or those best double albums...

To say the white album by the beatles... the wall by pink floyd... or Physicall Graffiti by Led Zepellin...seems just too foreseeable...cliche... even if they are really great records...

A double album was a real dangerous commercial and critical move for bands... some even considere this as megalomania or pretentious... but why not try to jump higher than the stars ? ...and they even really try it to do this in those psychedelic days aka prototype stoner days :afro:

Odessa by the Bee Gees if it is surely not the best double album of the late 60s and 70s... it's seriously an ambitious work ... for a band with an average age of only 20 years old !!

It was released in March 1969
