That's the best thing I've ever seen/heard/tasted etc.

I find it pretty amazing that nearly everyday I meet someone who seen/had/heard/tasted the best ever of something or other.
So much awesome and epic stuff going on in the world, it feels like I can go to any random restaurant these days and taste the best food that was ever made on this planet.

It has been researched what makes people say or remember something like that. It appears almost always it is the particular circumstances/mood/vibe that did it. Like eating a good (but not the best) schnitzel after you played pool with a good friend, or having that amazing cup of coffee on that really nice and sunny location. The other good things in those situation happen to influence how much you enjoy the taste of something apparently.

 

with the internet these days, the best recipe ever is a lot easier for every restaurant to find and utilize.

 

my friend was just bitching about this last night - how the waiters at the restaurant he cooks for claims they have the BEST food in rochester. and he wonders where they are getting this from. they've only been open for a little over a year. even as the one cooking the food, he thinks they think too highly of themselves.

i think this is a really good point. sometimes i try a new beer, and i really like it. but maybe it's only because other things combined to make it an enjoyable drinking experience. then i try the beer again a few weeks later, only to find out it isn't that good.

 

Maybe when some people make such claims it's just echoing the advertising industry, where the product being advertised is always claimed to be superior to all others.
Perhaps this all has subtle conditioning effect on the way people relate to their lives and express themselves.
