It's a book by Jane Goodall, has anyone read it. It's almost powerful enough of a book to make me turn completely vegitarian. It takes 120 gallons of water to produce 2 pounds of wheat as compared to 26,500 gallons to produce 2 pounds of beef, no misunderstanding 26,500 gallons. I was amazed.
Check out Magic Bus Ride under communal living if you want, I might have found a school bus.
    Cheers,
    George

On one acre of soil you could grow 40,000 pounds of potatoes or 40,000 pounds of onions. Or 250pounds of meat.

    World hunger could be solved.

Also the Amazon is being cut down for room to graze cattle for places like Mcdonalds.

    Go veg!

Try telling that to your omnivore friends... they won't give a damn!!! I've tried, turning a blind eye is the usual response.

Don't I know! But you gotta give them time, noone can go through a radical change too fast.

Like before veganism they gotta get to vegetarianism. And even just becoming vegetarian can take months, graduallly cutting down on various different meats and then cutting them out. They've gotta come to the realisation that they don't need meat to enjoy food and that too takes time.

I went vegan overnight. (From being an omnivore) It's not hard. All of you people are just really lazy. It's not hard, seriously.

It has nothing to do with being lazy ophelia...

It took me a long time to go vegan, and it wasn't because I was lazy. I was undereducated on the subject...that was a big factor.

Not to mention taste buds adapt. If you're used to eating pizza and burgers on a daily basis it's going to be hard to get used to eating healthier things, like fruits and veggies, simply because they aren't going to taste "right".

Half the food that I eat now, I hated a few years ago... but, because I kept eating those things, I acquired a taste.

It's also a psychological thing. When you get into daily habits and routines, including the foods you eat, it's quite difficult for MOST people to change that. Some people will eat certain foods for comfort as well, which leads to a struggle. As well as convenience... some people are used to picking up a quick bite to eat from a fast food restaurant and what have you, because it's easy. But when you go veg, it's not quite that easy to always have things readily available to you that way. And, I've noticed as well, since I went vegan, even if I find something vegan at a fast food place... I'd rather not support that place because of the meat and what have you... Convenience IS an issue being vegan, and I won't lie about that. I've gotten used to it, as I'm sure all of us vegans have, but in the beginning it took a lot of strength for me to care more about what I was putting into my body rather than how easy it was for me.

You're a cool girl, I enjoy reading what you have to say, but I don't think it's necessarily right to go and accuse people of being lazy because it's hard for them to make the transition into veganism. I'd rather see someone take their time with it, than to not even think twice about what they are consuming and wasting.

That is unfair to accuse people of being lazy for that.

I'm just trying to encourage people- in a tough love kind of way. A lot of people have qualms about making change, but it's all in their head. I'm just trying to be a breath of fresh air- like the kid that pushes you off the diving board when you're too afraid to jump and have been standing their for 5 minutes.

I didn't mean to hurt anyone, sorry :)

Ok, I thought of some good ways for people who are having a hard time going veg to encourage themselves:

-Have a calendar and each day that you don't eat meat, put a sticker on the day.

-Keep a pamphlet about farm factories in your pocket, so every time you're tempted to eat flesh you can look at the pictures and remember how terrible it is.

    - Do it with a friend, so you can encourage each other and talk about it.

    - Watch the "meet your meat" video at www.peta.org After watching that you will never want to eat meat again. Peta is a really great website if you want sources like pictures and facts

-Get yourself a "vegetarian" button or t-shirt or something. You won't want to eat meat if you're wearing it, because you won't want to be a hyporite.

that's all i have for now
