Watch out for those Hyland's teething tabs. They contain Belladonna and in large doses it is poisonous. There was a mother on another board who gave them to her baby, and the baby ended up with irreversible damage. She took the tabs in to get tested and what they found was that there was no consistency in the amount of Belladonna from one bottle to the next. I threw out my Hyland's as soon as I found out about that.

I used to freeze grapes and put them into a babysafe mesh feeder. She would go to town gnawing on it. Also, a frozen bagel is great for teething.

hmm... i've heard chamomile tea frozen into popsicles works good... herbs for kids has a teething mix... i forget what it's called tho... maybe gum-o-mile?
Wow I'm really surprised about the hylands thing... I've never heard of it being unsafe! Usually homeopathic amounts are so minute that they NEVER cause any ill affects...I've always heard nothing but good things for hyland teething/colic tabs.... who knows tho???? Where did she get them tested? Also where can you find babysafe mesh feeders? I never heard of them but that sounds like a wonderful idea!

Hyland's released a response claiming that their products are safe and that Belladonna is used in a minute amount. I read about that child last year some time, so I don't know all the specifics. It did scare me enough to stop using them (and I used them for my first child with no problems). Here's Hyland's statement:

I bought my babysafe feeders at Target for like $5. They were the Munchkin brand and came as a two-pack. They were wonderful for teething and when first introducing fruits and such. Here's a pic, but much cheaper at Target.

Those little mesh feeders work great. I'll put crushed ice or frozen fruit in there when my son needs it. Its always done the trick.
