Can tea tree oil be used as a replacement/alternative for sea salt? Or is it only used for treating hypertrophic scarring in piercings?
Tea Tree oil can be used as an antiseptic, but you must dilute it down to a 6/1 mixture. It is very strong to the point that it has been used to remove keloid scarring and at full strength will damage newly forming skin. this also depends on where your piercing is located. Some skin is more susceptible to damage by the tree oil than others. The sea salt is the best method to care for a piercing while it is healing. You can use a drop or two of Lavender oil but only once a week after your piercing has healed to keep the tunnel conditioned.
Well, sea salt spray never worked for me. If anything I think it slows down my healing process. Right now I have a rook peircing that is almost 3 months old and it was scabbing and getting icky. I used pure tea tree (oops, didn't dilute it) and within 3 days everything seemed to be going right for once. So basically I asked becuase I may get more peircings in the future and I was curious on whether I could skip the sea salt crap and use the tea tree. Where can I find Lavender oil?
Ehhh the sprays often contain other ingredients....I would make your own sea salt mixture. You can use sea salt or kosher (pickling) salt. Mix it 1 teaspoon of sea salt to 200ml water. You should be able to find lavender oil at a heath food shop or co-op. They will scab, that is how the body works. Tea tree prolly didn't harm too much on that part of your skin. The tissue there is pretty thick. If you use tea tree on places like nipples, and genitals and other sensative areas it will kill skin..lol
