http://msmagazine.com/blog/2017/10/12/heart-period-equitys-tampon-tax-psa/ The link came in an email digest. I'm conflicted, on first read. I see the point, that this tax only applies to women (forgetting that partners often buy the products), and is by a strict definition, a burden only on women, not men (or, on bleeding women only). However, I'm also a proponent of bag fees to encourage use of reuseable bags, so I'm seeing a potentially environmental angle, too. (Meaning an existing tax could envpcourage a change in behavior) Now, I read this once. I did not follow embedded links. My thoughts were: Tax menstrual products like adult diapers. They serve the same function, preserving dignity while fluids leave the body. That makes it "fair" under the assumptions of the article. Tax them because non disposable options exist. Encourage more use of durable options. Good on Gov. Moonbeam for signing the law to get menstrual supplies to low income students! Yes, incarcerated women should have these products, and not at the hiked up commissary rate. (Commissary and prison phone calls are a racket worthy of other threads.) Bleeders of HF, what say you?
Considering it's a necessity, these products shouldn't be taxed. Sure I could just not use anything but don't think people around me would like that too much. lol It seems unfair to tax women for products we have no choice in buying.
The real debate is that in the UK anyway these products are not classed as a necessity hence taxed! Some politicians are suggesting that if women cannot afford sanitary products they should move to cheaper or more affordable brand! I have never heard so much claptrap in my whole life! Every woman knows that cheaper products are not as effective, need changing more often and possibly/probably work out more expensive in the long run! Women have been campaigning for a long time to get the "taxed as a luxury" rating changed. Just thought that I might throw in the - if men had to use a product for several days each month for the whole of their fertile lives if it would have a zero tax rating No prizes for guessing the answer!
I'm sure there's mens products that are taxed too like aftershave and things like that, I don't think it exact fair to go criticising everything men do because a tampon pack just got taxed lol. I feel this "attack on women" thing is just utter rubbish tbh. I buy a sandwich from a Cafe, it's taxed. It's just how the economy is. Nothing personal. Money wins.
I think that equating after shave with products that stop you from bleeding like a stuck pig for all to see is absolutely ridiculous!
Tesco has become the first UK retailer to remove the so-called “Tampon Tax” from women's sanitary products in a move which will save women hundreds of pounds over the course of their lifetimes. The supermarket cut the prices of tampons, sanitary towels and panty liners by five per cent This was back in July.. other big retailers followed in uk
I don't think they should be taxed. Non-disposable products do exists, but they don't work for everyone. My wife tried the diva cup for a while but had issues with yeast infections, despite following all of the recommendations for disinfecting, etc. It just didn't work for her and she had to return to pads/tampons.
This is bullshit. Women already receive feminine products for free in prisons and jails. They are supplied to them. Their is a number they receive per day for free. A person does not need 20 tampons a day. Toilet paper is free too. If you want a specific brand then that is on you, This is just hyped up bullshit that is another group looking to skew facts and outrage people.
Uses for tampons and pads in prison. Here is one. To do hair! https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/md3zqwcd1cwigbuxsfbh.jpg They are also used for handles in weapoms
I always accepted it as a necessary evil. But that was until I found out they were considered luxury items. Pink tax on stuff like perfume and my mint julep mask is one thing. Those are luxuries. Meanwhile Viagra is covered by insurance. But, no, there's no patriarchy... My guess is the people taxing these items have a penis between their legs.
Boulder County, a very progressive place, allows two per day, for three days. Not enough for most women.
Have you seen the price of a prescription for Eight (yep, that's how many in a bottle)...without Insurance? Be thankful it is insured, if not there would be many a limp penis disappointing the already "demanding" American woman for perfection in all areas of life from today's man. Rant over...carry on.
