I purchased my first set last night. Not sure how to handle them. They were packaged in a box with a book. I unwrapped the box, took out the book, unwrapped the cards (shrink wrapped) and placed them back in the tray inside the box, replaced the book and closed the box.

I feel like I contaminated them already.

I'd like to try them NOW.

Maybe I should smudge them first?

I know, but they've already been handled by so many other people already.

You don't think I should smudge them first?

shouldnt matter, i would imagine shuffling would be much of a cleanse, how you think tarot readers read people. i wouldnt think they would be tainted lol

If they are new in the package they have been mostly handled by machines...

Smudging won't hurt but probably isn't necessarily.... They are your cards and should be treated however you choose. Do what makes you comfortable with them.

Thanks guys! Going to escape for a bit now and do a simple one card reading. I really need to do it NOW! It was so hard to not do it right away last night after we got home, but I knew my mind wasn't calm enough.

There's a question that needs an answer. It's pressing and I need all the guidance I can get. I need a sign and I'm open to whatever the sign tells me.

    ^ right you are.

Also, the Tarot do need to be kept in a certain way, if you expect them to give you readings that make sense...the only time other ppl should be allowed to handle them are when they are being "read". At least that is how I always felt. They are for you to use, work with and learn by in whatever way you feel led to learn them...but not for others to play with. (It is actually not hard to look all this up. :))

They should, at the least, be wrapped in a natural fabric such as silk, cotton, or similar. People vary as to what color they think this fabric should be.

I have not cut my cards in several years...however, the are kept in a wooden box, wrapped in purple silk.

I never could form a bond with the first several decks of tarot cards I purchased. The cards I finally had a connection with were given to me by a close friend and the connection with them is so strong that it astounds me every time I use them.

Lynn is right. I smudge my cards after every use and keep them wrapped in a cloth that is special to me. I even smudge the cloth from time to time. :)

Hi Aerianne:)...I've heard it said that it is tradition (and an old one) that tarot cards are to be gifted... and not purchased for yourself. That could be the reason...I've also bought decks for myself though. Hard to resist.

People are crazy weird about tarot. I use them all the time -- they are a device, imo -- don't get so caught up in their "holiness." Use them to help yourself and others and don't be so damn dogmatic.

    =-)

Actually, there are "rules", if you want, that have been associated with the Tarot for years upon years. It is because They Work.

The Tarot should be respected, and learned...but that shouldn't stop someone from reading when they are drawn to it...I'm just saying you should get a book - shoot, if I think though the years, I've bought about 4 or 5 different books discussing Tarot interpretation.

Even tho' it is Your Own interpretation that you should first trust, Do Some Studying and meditation on each one. Every single one should become personal to you...

They are a devise, I don't disagree with that...they can be a great self-exploration technique.

But really, the Tarot can reveal things you might be surprised at...or sometimes it just backs up what your initial thoughts were. The Tarot doesn't lie. They can be misinterpreted...but after many years, my experience is that when read right...the Tarot do not lie.

Not to be rude, but which cult do I join to read them "right?" :afro:

The reality is that tarot cards don't need a bunch of religious bologna surrounding them to make them any more or less accurate.

A bit of candor is needed when introducing them to people because of their taboo nature, and the reality that, maybe more than not, the users get involved with a can of worms with which they cannot deal.

Once you have grown and shared your energy with your tarot cards do NOT let anybody touch them. It mixes the energy between the two, I wouldn't buy any deck besides the original Tarot of Marseilles. The Crowley deck seems to look nice but you don't need the gimmicks, look into chaos magick

The tarot works as a way to trust your intuition.
I would buy the book The Way of Tarot: The Spiritual Teacher in the Cards by Alejandro Jodorowsky

smudging and taking care of them doesn't need to be associated with religion (or lack of)

You don't need to be in a cult to work with the tarot, it's all self-discipline and intuition. Sort of like meditation with a catalyst to center your energy and get a reflection of what you are looking for. Esoteric & Occult teachings are optional

Tarot has nothing to do with cults or religion. And what is so taboo about tarot? Tarot is well accepted these days.
Myself, I just have respect for the powers that be. Respect. :sunny:

Smudge them!! absolutely. If a spark should fall and burn the whole deck, don't worry. be happy.
Do a smudge prayer combo. Those things freak me out. I have had many many readings. They were all bullshit! the lot. Nothing came to pass. Many were the predictions, none of the predictions became the reality.
Anyone else have this experience? Tarot readers and palm readers and mind readers were all far from what became my reality! That's the honest truth.

You might try reading for yourself, Rose. You may be pleasantly surprised at the accuracy.
