how bad are they for you really? I am white and it's going to be summer soon and no one wants to see my white ass at the beach and I am sick of paying 30 bucks for a fake tan that lasts a week or spending hours spraying it on myself.

they aren't that bad for you if you use tanning lotion with SPF, cover your eyes and don't over do it.

I go once a week and it not only keeps my skin a bit bronzed, it keeps me from feeling depressed. UV rays make me think of summer. It's actually good for you if you keep it to a minimum. 15 minutes a week and you should be set. Start with only 5 minutes though. It's very easy to burn in those beds.

I like tanning. no ugly tan lines and I don't feel so white and wintery. I haven't been going often since I have to walk down to the place, but it's always worth it when I do.

Well I can't tan (I am about a step away from albino my skin is so fair) so I never go to tanning beds, but I remember when I tried them once, before high school prom, and I enjoyed laying in the heat (although a month membership yeilded no golden brown skin). It was cozy.

But I figure since my skin wont tan, my best option is to nurture my fair skin, protect it from any UV, so I can have flawless skin and avoid wrinkle or melanoma trouble when I am older.

My mother is convinced they're safe, but then she used to have one in her beauty salon and I was asking in ear shot of her clients. ;)

Now they have a spray tan booth, which seems better all round. Similar price, looks as good, and lasts for the same time. So a great alternative.

I'm with Sera and doing the whole pale and interesting thing. No point arguing with mother nature, she always wins.

I don't understand... tanning beds are horrible for you, especially if you don't tan naturally. Every time you are out in the sun, your skin cells become damaged. If you get burned (which is frequent in tanning beds) the DNA in the cells can be permanently damaged or even completely destroyed, and can lead to a variety of things besides just skin cancer. The damage or destruction of the DNA is irreversible; your body doesn't just get rid of the damaged cell and grow a new healthy one.

Don't tan. I don't see why orange skin is beautiful anyway.

Is it the damaged DNA that brings about things like skin cancer?

Yeah, well all cancer is, is a cell that has mutated and is out of control. Every cell in your body (except stem cells) has a defined place and function that is determined by the information in the DNA. When that information is jumbled or some is "removed" the cell becomes something different with a different function.

Everyone has cancerous cells pretty much from the time of birth, but usually our bodies recognize the cells and macrophages (these huge, awesome cells) eat all the cancers. Unfortunately our bodies have not evolved enough to rid of every damaged cell (which we don't want anyway) so sun damaged cells are basically allowed to run rampant, sometimes resulting in cancer.

Well I'm glad my mom always made me wear a hat and t-shirt at the beach when I was younger. I never understood why I had to, when my twin didn't. I'm just so fair skinned that even SPF45 sunscreen won't do the trick for me. (My twin is a faternal twin, and actually pretty dark complected) I have had a few bad sunburns in my time, but far less than I could have had, thanks to my nagging mother. =P

    Thanks for the info.

That is why it is crutial that fair skinned folk take care of their skin because they are more likely to have more damaged cells.

If anyone is like me, it is even more important... I burn horribly very quickly and I don't peel. If you don't peel, take every percaution available to not get burned because this is a good indication that you are most susceptible to cancer. Even if you do peel, there are still cells left behind that are damaged, so don't think that peeling gets rid of all the damaged cells either. The cells that peel are completely dead, dehydrated to the point of sluffing.

i tan frequently. i know they are somewhat bad for your skin.. cancer and such, but i just love them! i usually just tan in the winter to cheer me up. plus, i burn very easily, and burning is much worse for your skin than to tan, in my opinion. i love the way it feels, the warmth surrounds me for 20 mins.. i usually go to sleep. its that comforting for me. plus, i love to be tan. i look healthier and feel better about myself.

everyone has their own opinions about tanning.. just do what you want. its your body. :D

Oh come on, are you saying that here in Washington we don't get enough winter sun? Haha.

    ...okay, not counting this year.

Back when I was 17 through the time I was about 19, I was a tanning bed-aholic. ;) I was addicted to being so nicely brown and just the feeling that being under the rays gave me, especially in the winter months. It seemed to boost my mood.

I tanned easily, and I started going to a tanning salon that offered beds that tanned you much more quickly, but without the harmful UV rays. It cost me more than regular tanning places, but I definitely needed less sessions there to keep a nice glow as opposed to the other places I had tried.

One time, at one of the "regular" salons, I got burnt so bad that I could barely walk for days on end. They had put new bulbs in the bed and warned me beforehand that I might be more sensitive to them, and split my time under the lights in half that day, but still, I burned severely. It was awful!

I stopped going for various reasons. I didn't want to blow the money, I didn't have the time to go, and the biggest reason was I started to worry about what kind of affect that doing it long-term would have on my skin.

But I don't think that going for a short amount of time, to get yourself a base tan for the summer, would be too bad of a thing. Just don't over-due it, and make sure you use the right kinds of sunscreen. ;)

I use to be really light but now I'm a honey bronze. Unfortunately I'm allergic to the sun now and have to keep covered so I won't break out, plus I'm cold all the time. I've noticed that my bronze is fading and I'm getting that pale hugh that i had as a child. I have to use the really strong 40 sunblock and I learned from someone that if I put it on and don't wait 30 minutes before I go ouside that it will cook my skin. (That's nice to know, now. I remember when I was young and I went to the beach with my family. Everyone was in the water while I sat on the wall. I remember getting really sick and my grandma had to take me home because my face was as red as a stop light.
Now that I got that out the way, here is my answer. Please don't do tanning beds or worry because your skin isn't bronze. Take it from me, every year my arms were bronzed and my face made me look like I had the chicken pox. (I wasn't trying to tan, just out in the really hot sun with no protection and I'm not one of those people that can do it and get away with it.) Milk is good, chicken pox looks creepy so opt for milk.

my mom has exzema(however you spell it) and since she was very young they told her that a tanning bed was the only thing that would help her... the tanning bed brings her atural oils to the top of her skin keeping it supple and kepping it from cracking... i myself used to go to the tanning bed but now i am poor it makes me feel soft and i figure i am killing myself with everything else i do why not feel pretty while i slowly die

I used to work at a tanning place and got to tan for free so I tanned every night after work. It was relaxing and I was so tan! Plus I spent alot of time at the beach. But pretty recently I moved to a land locked state and now I'm pale as ever. And I've decided that I won't bother with the tanning beds anymore as I don't want to harm my skin and age myself quicker. I'll stay pale.

the UV rays are bad, but what are we gonna do? We can't be hermits and keep out of the sun and any of it's rays.

Also, you need sunlight for Vitamin D.

There are many benefical results from tanning as opposed to bad ones as long as you don't over due it. A few mintues a week or every few days is enough.

There was a big think about them on the news yesterday morning.... they are okay in "moderation" But ask a dermatologist and there is nosuch thing as "moderation" I personally dont think there safe... Your damaging your skin.... It is healthy to get sunlight yes... But with sunblock on.... I personaly dont think their safe... Theye trying to make a law saying if you under 16 you must have a parent wit h you to use one (to keep useage down) and if your under 18 that you must have parental consent to use it.

i've heard they are pretty bad for your skin in the long term. I have never used one and i'd never think of using one, cos my skin is so fair and it easily get freckles everywhere, besides the tanned look doesnt suit me hehehehe...
i dont know, why ot trying those fake tan lotions instead? i wouldnt risk my health in order to look "tanned" (being pale is alright i think)
