anyone have a good a/b extraction for syrian rue? I have food grade D-limonene, citric acid, 93% ethanol from Sugar cane, food grade lye, edible lime, stainless pots, pryrex, 4 cup glass gravy separator, pectic enzyme, white vinegar...would love a step by step...I have stilling and brewing chem background. Never done this one Rue, but in theory it SHOULD work: Simplest extraction: 1. Grind seeds to powder 2. Soak in Naphtha (pure Naphtha, no dirty lighter fluids) for a couple of days, shaking occasionally. 3. Filter out the liquid using a suitable coffee filter. Keep the mushy seed material, discard the liquid. 4. Soak your mushy seed material in your strong alcohol for an other couple of days. Again, occasionally shaking during this time. You may want to do a couple alcohol soaks to ensure you got most of what you're looking for (harmalines). It will probably take less time each new soak. Filter and combine the alcohol from each soakings. Discard the seed mush, keep the liquid. 5. Evaporate the liquid entirely, ensuring that it is gone. You will now be left with a crude, pasty extract. More Pure Acid/Base Extraction. This can also be done after your crude naphtha/alcohol extraction to remove more solids: 1. Grind up your seeds. 2. Soak in an acid of pH3 or below (Hydrochloric acid is great for this). Use just enough to cover your material. Mix well for about half an hour. Filter out solids afterwards (careful not to burn your ass, face or anything in between)! 3. Now mix in a small amount of your Lye. Cloudy substances should be swirling around in your solution. Mix for an other 15 minutes. Do so until your solution becomes cloudy, and it is indeed basic. You can test if it's basic using pH strips. Add slightly more Lye if need-be. Careful not to turn yourself or any other bodies into mush in this process! 4. Pour this solution into a separating funnel (inverted conical flask with tap on it). Use small portions of solvent (Chloroform, Ether or Dichloromethane work great here) to separate the alkaline layer from the solvent. Sometimes using water in this step also helps separation. 5. Take the separated liquidy substance and thoroughly evaporate. After evaporation, a simple alcohol soak can be done once more to purify the end product, but this isn't always necessary. 6. Make sure the chemicals and fumes have subsided before consuming. Always test your own before giving it to anybody else. Dose Rue responsibly. Take care!
