The unrest has laid bare old resentments in Syria, a primarily Sunni Muslim country with a potentially explosive sectarian mix.. Beset by upheaval, Assad is increasingly relying on relatives from his tiny Alawite sect, leading to speculation about how much power he commands over them..

His younger brother, Maher, is key - believed to be in command of much of the current crackdown.. Maher is commander of the army’s Fourth Division, regarded as Syria’s best-equipped and most highly trained forces, and of the six brigades of the Republican Guard, responsible for protecting the capital, Damascus..

'Alawites are an offshoot of Shi'ites. Some other Muslims, particularly in Syria and Lebanon, accept them as Muslims, but others consider themheretics (ghali) and outside of Islam. 'Alawites have seven pillars of Islam, including Jihad and devotion to 'Ali,who is divine. 'Alawites believe in drinking wine, and they have something similar to a communion service. Tens of thousands of 'Alawites have been killed by other Muslims, but today 'Alawites are in control in the country of Syria...

The last I heard Assad has been slaughtering his own people for several weeks, and Arab countries have finally called for him to stop. The United States has called for Assad to step down, and backed it up with some mild ineffective economic sanctions. Are you saying you can't believe the United States has done that, done so little, or what? What do you think an appropriate course of action would be? I seriously doubt we'll see military action on the part of the United States. Do you think the source is credible?

I might be ignorant but ecologically speaking there is a finite amount of fossil fuel amongst an ever more cohesive anti Judeo Christian populace and we want it. By collecting the oil reserves of the world we dictate what happens and where.

Of course we aren't the only people vying for petrol reserves. The various 'intelligence' agencies of the world have for the last 800 years been dividing and conquering. Can you say Templar and Hasheeshin?

None of this is conspiracy when it's black and white in the history books. Of course wars before were fought for gold, but now right of passage and oil and gems are the big mainstays. And heroin.

In just a few years clean water and clean air will be worth more than anything. And nobody will own any of them because they will be destroyed. This is just ecology talking, with a smidgen of history.

The players change but the game keeps going.
