So... this morning the world as I know it disappeared. A pink stripe appeared when I pissed on a stick.

I'm 27 and have never, ever had a pregnancy scare before. I kinda figured because I am over a week late and my tits are huge and hard.

I am totally in the dark about what to expect. None of my friends are breeders... I do realize its pretty rare to be 27 and have no close female friends who have had a kid.

I have an appointment with a Doctor on monday to get everything checked out and get a "professional test". And we bought the "what to expect when expecting" book.

I am not use to not knowing what to do, how to handle or what the next course of action is... but here I am totally befuddled. Feel like a complete idiot, but...

    Any advice?

    Thanks Ihmurria!

It is awesome....if not totally apropos... haha. I'm flying home to SK in mid/early January, sending in my husband's immigration paperwork, and hopefully he will be able to join me and my swelling belly by March/April... and hopefully he will have a working visa by that time!

We wanted to have kids... were just hoping to hold off until all of this was settled!

I might have to stop by the Parenting Forum.. don't think I've ever been there... haha.

I was 26 when I got pregnant and 27 when my twins were born. I, just like you, had no friends with children. I had never even been around a baby before. I was terrified. I understand exactly how you feel. You can PM me anytime, I went through almost the exact same thing. As scared as I was back then, everything couldn't have worked out better for me. Hopefully you will have the same luck. Just try not to stress out too much about it, I'm sure whatever you decide will work out just fine.

ITP: Line up a birthing center, not a hospital. Get a midwife and a doula, learn all you can about natural child birth. Use a birthing ball, consider a water birth (much less painful), read up on the new cloth diapers and best of CANUCKISTANI LUCK

Thanks everyone for your well wishes and offers of info help. Don't be surprised if you get some PMs!

Its not the birthing or the raising of kids that is scarey to me though! Its the actual pregnancy! The thought of something inside me, growing... well... it's daunting and more than a little troublesome to someone who values their personal space. lol... my space is now shared, i guess.

Pain is pain...and in this case, its momentary. In the space of a lifetime, birthing pain is just a drop in the bucket. My grandma used to tell me that...

I've been around a lot of babies and children. I am considerably older than my half-sisters, and cousins... spent a great deal of time growing up babysitting. So, I know what to do and all that... I can change a diaper one handed, in the dark. The only thing is? Well... the past 10 years or so I've avoided having to do so... hahha. Kids and babies just hold no draw for me. My mom said that babies and kids never interested her either... haha. That doesn't give me a lot of faith!!

Think I was just hoping for some "insider info". haha. Kids and babies aren't new to me, and neither is pain.... its just the actual pregnancy that I am lost in how to deal with. I figure it's a pretty important thing to do right. Foodwise, I am worried about eatting right. My mother gained about 80 pounds with my sister's birth... I would like to avoid that! I don't mean weight gain in general... just excessive weight gain.

Awww, congratulations! What a blessing! :)

Don't stress over the weight gain. Everybody is different. I gained around 20 pounds with my oldest son, and he was born weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces. I gained 40 pounds with my twins, and they were both around 5 pounds each. I was one of those extremely lucky women who left the hospital looking like I hadn't even been pregnant, much to my surprise. The weight came off super fast for me, which I hadn't expected either. I just tried to eat healthy during my pregnancies. I seemed to crave stuff that was good for me anyway, and the times that I DID want not-so-good things, I ate them in moderation. I knew that if I overindulged on junk that it would show up later on, not as baby weight but as extra weight that would be harder to shed afterwards, plus I kept thinking "is this really the best thing to feed my growing babies?". When it came to the healthy foods like fruits and veggies, I ate them like crazy. I made lots of fruit and yogurt smoothies, sometimes with tofu in them. I was really big on eating as healthy as I possibly could, I mean, I was growing my babies, and I took that job to heart. :)

Oh, and if you have any questions at all about pregnancy, feel free to PM me. My best friend used to call me all of the time when she was pregnant, asking me questions. ;)

    thanks everyone!

I have my first "official" appointment at the OB-GYN tomorrow. More than a little freaked, as i heard a rumour that they might take my blood... and I don't do that well. Tend to hyperventilate, and faint... haha. My doctor back home always lays me down and tells me a story... what a suck, eh?

We went to get groceries. Got a lot of yogurt, fruit, veggies and juice (real juice, not juice flavoured sugar water)... as well as oatmeal, and tofu. Oatmeal is definetly needed... fiber, need fiber! lol... heard the "fiber issue" is a common one.

No morning sickness yet... fingers crossed that I just don't get any. I used a computer program to determine my due date... they said August 17th, and that I am 5 weeks along. We'll see what the doctor says tomorrow.

    thanks again!

Okay, advice from a first time preggo:

I cannot stand the what to expect book. It's kinda fear-based. It's good for some basic information, but Ina May's book "Birthing From Within" is really good, as well as "Babies remember birth: and other misconceptions about newborns", and The Breastfeeding Book. Tons of websites out there. The WTEWYE book is really not as detailed as I (a detail-oriented person) would like. So many other good ones.

As far as eating, start this now to keep yourself with it later: eat several smaller meals throughout the day, instead of 3 bigger ones. Because as your belly gets bigger, you won't be able to eat as much at a time. AND heartburn kicks in with empty stomachs. So keep something in it at all times. Also, whenever you eat anything, make sure there's a little protein in it. Eating an apple for a snack? Have some peanut butter with it. Helps to stabilize your blood sugar better.

And this is my big one: Sleep. Start now training yourself to sleep on your left side. Because by the time your belly impedes your sleeping, you'll be suffering sleeplessness anyway. It's best to deal with the minor problems now instead of letting them build up, you know?

And something I recommend: A midwife. They see pregnancy as more of a normal, natural, everyday process. OBs tend to sniff out problems more readily, black-marking everything that's even slightly off (which might be normal for you). AND midwives will also deal with other problems you might have, like keeping your husband involved with your pregnancy, birthing fears, breastfeeding concerns. My midwife is awesome. I'm sure she's not a fluke. :)

If you want a preggo-buddy, you can PM me anytime. :)

    Hey HippyFreak...

I didn't really get much from the "expecting" book... lol. My husband has been using it more than me... he is very paranoid right now though. I think its because he is nervous about being separate from me, and my belly for several months. When I get home in early January, I will go to the library and check out some books more geared to my style.

Why sleeping on your left? As opposed to your right? I have been napping a lot.. really tired, but can't seem to sleep the "long hours" I used to. Always something to wake me up, although it is usually a screaming bladder.. lol.

I would totally go with a midwife... IF. If it were covered under any sort of medical plan.... if I wasn't going to be living 3.5 hours from the city... if I hadn't had a couple weird childhood illnesses than might make this pregnancy more than a little rough. On the bright side? My doctor back home is great.... and she lives across the street... lol. She delivered my sisters, and has been my doctor since I was 10. She listens to your opinion on things, which is quite rare with doctors I've found.

thanks for the help everyone.... oh.. and oatmeal tastes like wallpaper paste, FYI. Either my grandma was a master chef, or my tastebuds just didn't know better when I was younger... lol.

Well I'm still alive, so it must not be too deadly. :p

Seriously, it tastes good together if you blend yogurt and fruit with it in a shake. Tons of protein too. :)
