    Every country has them.

I saw a magpie this morning.
I was told one for sorrow, and two for Joy.

Magpies were said to be the only birds that didn't comfort Jesus or sing when he was crucified, leading to the superstition that they meant no good.

    Do you know of any?

Never Say "Happy Birthday" Too Early
Celebrating or even congratulating someone on a birthday before the day arrives brings bad luck, at least in Russia that is.

Don't Place Two Mirrors Opposite Each Other
The infinite reflections may look cool, but in Mexico and elsewhere facing mirrors opens a doorway for the devil.

Never Stick Your Chopstick Straight Up
Poking chopsticks down into your food is a big no-no in Japan. The utensils look like the unlucky number four, which means death, and also the incense sticks used at funerals. Another tip: Don't point your chopsticks at anyone. That's just plain rude.

It's bad luck to have a black cat cross your path because they are really luck thieves.

That is true in Holland also... never wish them an early birthday, or any holiday.

Don't Let the Jumbies Get Ya!

In the Virgin Islands, it is not considered wise to be out after dark as the evil sprits could get you. So they say...

    Halloween Superstitions List
    • One of the old Halloween superstitions says the souls trapped in purgatory are set free for 48 hours on All Hallows Eve.
    • If you wear your clothing inside out and then walk backward on Halloween, you will see a witch at midnight.
    • [IMG]On Halloween, you can cut open an apple horizontally and count the seeds to learn how many children you will have.
    • After bobbing for apples, place the apple under your pillow to dream about your future husband or wife.
    • Wearing a costume or disguise on Halloween night tricks evil spirits by hiding your true identity.
    • At midnight on Halloween, light a new orange-colored candle and let it burn until sunrise to receive good luck. (This one sounds like a fire hazard).

    • Catch a snail on Halloween night and lock it in a flat dish. In the morning you will find the snail has written the first letter of your sweetheart’s name in slime.
    • Stare into an open flame on Halloween and you may see the future. (Melisandre from Game of Thrones says this one is true).
    • Place a silver coin and some rosemary under your pillow on Halloween night if you want to dream about your future husband or wife.
    • Go to a spring of water on Halloween night while carrying a lantern to find your future love. Look into the water using your light and you will see the reflection of your future wife or husband.

Give a Penny If You've Received Something Sharp
Gifting anything with a blade can supposedly sever a relationship, so if you receive a knife set or a pair of scissors as a present, give the person a coin in return.

Don't Go Right Home After a Funeral
A Filipino tradition called "pagpag" dictates that people never go straight back to the house after a wake. Otherwise, a bad spirit might tag along and come inside. Mourners will make a stop at a restaurant or store first just in case.

    Whistling Indoors Invites Evil
Whistling while you work may be an issue in Lithuania where it's forbidden to whistle indoors because the noise is believed to summon demons.
