How can it be overrated when it was never rated in the first place? Have you listened to them? Because he doesnt whine. It seems like everytime a male sings in a rock song, that he is all of a sudden "whining" and the music is now crap.. SDRE isnt true emo... there lyrics are poetic and not always about their ex girlfriends... how can they be emo? they dont even dress emo.

OMG I hope you don't believe this yourself and are just joking..
SDRE are one of the bands that started the whole emo music scene btw

And about the whole dress thing, I will reply like Lars Frederiksen: Just because I dress like this, doesn't mean I'm a communist..

Thank you, thank you very much..

Firstly, yes I have listened to them. I don't state my opinions on subjects I don't know anything about...

Secondly, they ARE overrated. I've heard countless people rave about how 'SDRE is what emo is all about' etc etc etc. They aren't the biggest band in the world admittedly, but people still go on and on about them as if they've discovered the greatest band on earth. Anyone who knows anything about emo seems to know this band..

Personally I think they make average emo at best.

Their singer DOES whine (call it singing if you like) by the way, and their whole sound just pisses me off.

Well sorry to be pedantic, but i think thats actually a Billy Bragg lyric there.. :) I see where you're coming from though, certainly makes sense when applied to SDRE's clothes.

You don't have to wear crap, trendy emo clothes to make crap, tendy emo music.

SDRE DID NOT START THE EMO SCENE... not even close... emo started in the early 80s... SDRE is indie or indie/emo to some. But they do not share similarities with many many emo bands.

saying they started the emo scene is just silly.

They arent overrated, if they were over rated they would be making a lot more money than they are right now.. Just because emo kids talk about them and enjoy them doesnt mean they are over rated.

Lol thats funny... I dont know how melodic singing and soothing, slow, music can "piss you off"

Bands like Pig Destroyer or The Bled tend to piss me off, but in a good way.

SDRE is not trendy, 99.9% of emo is not trendy... 99.9% of emo is underground local bands.

You can hardly talk about emo in public without people bashing it... thats how trendy it isn't.

SDRE started as just a rock band, not emo... they werent t rying to be emo at all, and they dont sound emo.

And they dont whine, thats just a stereotype emobashers like to use... You want to listen to whiny trendy shit emo? put on some dashboard confessionals, get up kids, or juliana theory.

I think we hit a nerve..

SDRE influenced and inspired a lot of now a days emo bands..

"Sunny Day Real Estate or SDRE was an Alternative Rock cross Emo band formed in Seattle, Washington. The band is credited for bringing emo subgenre from an underground musical phenomenon to the more popular sub-mainstream level." (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunny_Day_Real_Estate)

and I like The Get Up Kids by the way.. Something to write home about is one of my favorite albums..

Sorry man, you'll never convince me that SDRE are anything more than just another average emo band. You're right by the way, emo has been around since the 80's... And up until the mid 90's it was actually pretty good, there were bands who could actually convey their 'emotional music' without bitching and screaming the whole time...

Then came a swarm of soulless bands EXACTLY like SDRE who just destroyed the genre. Everything since then has sounded the same (screechy and annoying). SDRE are just clones of most of the other crap thats around today.

Check out 'Last Night, After I Bought The Wine' by a Blacktop Cedance if you want real emo... It was only released in Jan 04 but was recorded in 1997, when good emo was on its last legs...

But I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this subject... You think it's great, i think it sucks... Doesn't look like we'll be changing our minds anytime soon :)

Ah well.. some like it, some don't.. that's very personal..

I like dillinger escape plan, but my roommates are always complaining to turn that noise off when I play it :(

I like emo, the whiny kind, the not so whiny kind.. I like it all.. but anyway SDRE isn't one of my favorites, I know better emo, but I can understand why people do like it..

Discussions like this one are pretty pointless.. either you like it, or you don't

Maybe they influenced other emo bands but they did not start emo. And I listen to Get up kids occassionally, but that is a secret I keep in the closet.

LooLoo... have you heard Asleep Under Last Weeks News? I think what seperates SDRE from other emo bands are
    1. The types of instruments they use in their songs (sometimes violins, xylophones, etc)
    2. Their lyrics. If you listen to the song 'Asleep under Last Weeks news' you cannot tell me those are emo lyrics... they are just rock song lyrics.
    3. The way they change their sound throughout their songs. One SDRE song might sound completely different than the next.

Dillinger escape plan is the shit.

What bands are your favorites? Im more into emotional hardcore or true screamo but I do like emo bands with melodic singing too..
    Favorites:
Saetia, La Mantra De Fhiqria, Emma, Broken Social Scene, Daphne Loves Derby, Hot Cross, Modest Mouse(arguably emo), Off Minor, Waxwing, The Moment, Now it's overhead(arguably again), Sorry About Dresden, Ache:Emelie, Apathy, Emery, Silverstein, Underoath, Armor For Sleep, The Assistant, Mineral, SamIam, Brand New, The Promise Ring, Red Animal War, Death Cab 4 Cutie & The Postal Service (Questionable),

there r more i cant think of rite now.
