Do you expect for suicides to be the problem they are in a generous welfare country like Norway? "Every year, between 500-600 people take their own lives, and approximately ten times attempt to do so. In Norway, therefore, there are far more people who die by suicide than in accidents on the road and at sea in total." More people die in Norway by suicide than in accidents - Norway Today
Suicide and suicide attempts in Norway - Public Health Report Here is the first link I found that I liked that relates to this. I'm suspicious because typically it's reported that Nordic countries are some of the happiest places world wide. They are number 3 in happiness. MAPPED: Happiest countries in the world - but did the UK make the top 10?
Finland is nr. 1 and notorious for the amount of winter time depressions and suicides as well. I guess the happy people and their average happiness levels still outweigh the suicidal people.
Norway ranks 51st on this list of suicide rates by country http://worldpopulationreview.com/countries/suicide-rate-by-country/ Edit: if you look through that list you will notice the wealthier countries are near the top, poorer countries rank later That might be about the quality of reporting Or it might be people in third world countries working 14 hours a day dont have time to sit around and mope
The happiness indexes are determined by surveys. So a certain amount of citizens judged their own happiness.
The Dutch have the highest suicide rates anywhere in the west, usually leaving nasty notes blaming their boss, because they are all white Christian nations with a long history of Calvinism. Since WWII the US has paid half the bills for NATO and the UN, while the EU is only now talking about creating their own military. Germany is nowhere near the only disciplined country in western Europe, and until modern times was a collection of smaller countries, and western Europe adopted Calvinism because it was a rough neighborhood, not the other way around. Anyway, with the US imposing order in the neighborhood for so long they have had the chance to invest more of their own money into their populations instead, and as their governments have provided extensive social programs they have all become less religious, and more trusting of their governments, volunteering more often to support their government. However, their populations are imploding due to their workaholic cultures stressing materialism over paying it forward. They are preparing their children to adopt an entirely different lifestyle, by investing in them now while they can, and attempting to leave the worst of their Calvinism behind them.
Another factor to consider. In some countries, there's a tendency to direct aggression outward. Indonesia and Malaysia are a good examples. There's a long tradition of people in those countries who have reached the limit of frustration picking up a machete and "running amok".anthropology.msu.edu/anp204-us18/2018/07/17/w3-activity-running-amok-in-malaysia-and-indonesia/ Running Amok in Bali Running Amok: A Modern Perspective on a Culture-Bound Syndrome In others, particularly advanced industrial countries with strong social inhibitions against aggression toward others, aggression tends to be directed inward toward oneself. The Scandanavian countries would fall into the latter category. ( this comes from Harvard professor Alex Inkeles, but I can't find an article to cite.)
Their suicide rate seems pretty low, so it may simply be that their transportation systems are very safe. Most of the people in the countries in the top 10 are quite poor, with the exception of South Korea. And the UAE is ranked 170. There also isn't data presented there about the relative wealth of the people who commit suicide in those countries. The US is ranked 27 for suicide, but most of the suicides in the US are committed by the poor and working class
"Unemployed people, in fact, are 72 percent more likely to commit suicide than people who are working" "People who earned less than $34,000 were 50 percent more likely to commit suicide, researchers found" 'Keeping Up With The Joneses' Could Lead To Suicide
I gave you World Health Organization stats showing suicide rates for most countries. You try and counter it with one 29 yr old study in San Francisco. Seriously? Look, if there was any truth to that you would have people in the poorest countries on earth killing themselves en masse. But then again, if people arent scared into believing they are in a high risk group, they are less likely to pay your wife $200 an hour to be asked how things make them feel
Norway has a lot of immigration, although not as much as Sweden. Also there are lots of Sami people living in Lapland. So, perhaps those two biggest minority groups are the cause.
