My mom has a recipe for stuffing that call for cognac. There is no congnac. The options for replacement are: cream sherry Glenfiditch [edit: Oh, she just found some dramboui, gan marnier, and contreau (No, not all in the same bottle.)] or go to the #@*%# store again. Or something else? Thanks
glenfiddich is a single malt scotch whisky, and it would be a terrible substitute for cognac. drambuie, gran marnier and cointreau are all liqueurs, and i am not sure but dont believe any of them are brandy based (i do know that drambuie is whisky based) cream sherry also isnt likely to closely enough resemble the flavor of cognacs to be a useful substitute. now i dont know what the recipe is for or anything other than you looking for an alternative to going to the store to get cognac. for all i know, substituting one of the above may IMPROVE the recipe...... but the recipe wont taste the same...... the best advice i could offer would be any type of brandy. if you dont feel like going out and dropping 60+ dollars on a bottle of decent cognac, you can probably substitute just about any inexpensive brandy for the cognac - especially armagnac. many cheap brandies are available in pint sizes, which will also reduce the cost. but personally i'd have a problem with using any beverage i wouldnt drink as an ingredient in a recipe...the flavors will still linger.
