Substitute for petroleum ether?

In LSA extraction, is there any subtitutes for petroleum ether that would work just as well?

 

Naphtha is the easiest to get, that's why it is so commonly referenced.

You can use chloroform, methanol, diethyl ether (as in ether the drug), hexane, dicholormethane, or any other non-polar solvent.

Chloroform and dichloromethane are both more dense than water, so they sink, unlike the other ones.

A big breath of diethyl ether would probably knock you out. The fumes are also explosive.

You could try ordering some hexane online... same with methanol. Unless you want to steal them from a high school chemistry teacher.

Anyways, the easiest one to get your hands on is definitely naphtha/petroleum ether. Just get some Ronsonol Lighter Fluid.

I don't know what extraction guide you are using, but usually the extraction calls for ethanol. Ethanol and petroleum ether dissolve different molecules, so they could not be substituted for each other. Try looking for a different extraction guide.

 

Just let the POWDERED (powder them first) seeds soak in water for acouple days, shaking often. Evaporate the water and mix the leftover gunk with high proof ethanol. Let it soak for 3 days, shaking often, and then filter the seed/ethanol solution. Now the LSA is in the ethanol. Just do some math to determine the amount of alcohol to use based off the alcohol/seed ratio you want. I usually do it so there is 250 (morning glory) seeds worth of LSA per 5ml or alcohol, but I've seen people use greater quantities so they take it in a 1 oz. shot.

 

I didn't realize people used Naphtha for de-fatting when extracting LSA. Seems a little excessive, but probably wouldn't hurt.

 

careful there, methanol is fairly polar, just slightly less so than ethanol, but the other ones you mentioned are good for the non-polar solvent.

I know from experience that butane works too. It is so fast and easy because you dont have to wait for the naphan to evaporate the butane will evaporate in a couple of min. I posted about it as a fast easy way to clean your seeds. And yes you do need to clean or defat your seeds because there is many fats and such that make the experience less enjoyable if you dont get rid of it when using something like alcohol to extract it. I have also read of people using clean acetone to extract with too. If you dont clean your seeds you can get gas and upset stomach and craps akey joints and be extra tired. The reason a cold water extraction works good to get all the good with out the bad is because the bad stuff is non polar and the good stuff is polar and water is a polar solivent so it will only get the good stuff. The problem with that is that it is not a very good solivent so the non polar bad gets in the way and the water does not get all the good stuff making waste. Now butane and naphtha is a non polar solivent so it will take all the fats and other non polar bad stuff out leaving the good stuff. Now alcohol and acetone have both polar and non polar charteristics so it will take both polar and non polar stuff with it making it nessasary to defat first. It will take almost all the polar out making it a better solivent for extracting the LSA.
